For a couple of years now we've talked about emergent narrative as the heart of this game — a world that generates its own story out of what people actually do inside it, rather than one that hands you a script and asks you to follow along. The foundation for that is built. The AWEN pipeline is running, the characters in the world can act on their own, and it works ... but right now it is deliberately limited. The world's inhabitants can do a handful of things, and nowhere near the full range of what we eventually want them capable of. That is on purpose, and it is where you come in.
Here is what we are actually going to do, and it is a little unusual. We are going to turn testers loose to roleplay, and then we are going to build the world around what they do — live, while they are doing it. Every day we read the roleplay that happened, we look for the story threads worth growing, and we write that new material back into the canon so the world remembers it. And at the same time, we build the tools the world needs to respond ... the ability to send a player a letter that arrives in character ... the ability to start a scavenger hunt that pulls people out into the world ... the ability to call for a knowledge check when a character reaches for something they might or might not know. We have a long list of ideas for tools like these. What we do not have — on purpose — is a fixed plan for which ones we build first.
That is the part that makes this different from normal development. We are not going to decide in advance what the world needs and then build it in a vacuum and hope it matches how people play. We are going to watch how people actually play, and build in response to that, so the tools we make are the tools the roleplay is genuinely asking for. Our foundation is built well enough that we can turn something a player did on a Tuesday into a working piece of the world not long after. That responsiveness is the whole point.
And yes, it is going to be messy. This is alpha. Things will be half-built, the world will occasionally do something strange, and some of what we try will not work on the first pass. If that sounds like a headache, this might not be your month to jump in. But if the idea of roleplaying inside a world that is visibly growing around you — shaped in real time by what you and the people beside you choose to do — sounds like exactly the kind of thing you've been waiting twenty-five years for, then this is the moment to be here for it.
The more of you who are in the world roleplaying, the more the world has to respond to, and the better everything we build during this stretch becomes.
