Since the last public patch note (0.0.12), The First Library has undergone a fundamental transformation: what started as an early prototype has grown into a fully playable convention build. The focus of this update is on immersion, the combat system, gamepad accessibility, and a stable multiplayer mode.

Important Note on Save Files: Worlds from version 0.0.12 are no longer compatible. For booth/convention operations, please use the "Reset Fair Worlds" option in the main menu.

World & Atmosphere

  • Handcrafted Homeworld: The game world is now permanently set and detailed (meadows, forests, mountains, rivers). Resources like trees, stones, wheat, hemp, and berries are placed at fixed, logical points.

  • The Library as the Hub: Discovered books are read at the reading desk. The Whisperstone guides you to the next undiscovered book. Unlocked knowledge applies to the entire session.

  • Dynamic Environment: Full day-and-night cycle with updated lighting, sky, and fog effects. Swimming in water is now possible.

Story & Game Onboarding

  • First Story Elements Implemented: A simple intro system introduces players to the world, complemented by initial introductory quests involving Kael, Ulrich, and the path to the library.

  • Convention Presets: Special start options allow players to either begin with the new tutorial or jump right in with all books unlocked.

Expanded Combat System

Third-person combat featuring new attack and defense options:

  • Weapon Arsenal:

    • Club: Attack combo.

    • Rusty Iron Longsword: Fast slashing combo ending with a thrust.

    • Wooden Spear: Melee thrust as well as ranged throw.

    • Shortbow: Aiming, charging, and ranged shots.

  • Defense & Movement: Wooden shield for blocking, including a shield bash. Dodging, jumping with fall damage, and automatic step-in when within range.

  • Enemies & Loot: Goblins, Goblin Boss (summons reinforcements), Wolves/Alpha Wolves, and Stone-Oak Ents in mountain regions. Defeated animals yield meat, hides, and tendons.

  • Balancing: Weapon and armor values have been fundamentally reworked and rescaled.

Survival, Building & Attributes

  • Resources & Food: Resource gathering synchronizes with the animation. Berries and mushrooms provide direct buffs for health, regeneration, and stamina.

  • Farming: Create crop beds, sow seeds, and harvest. Plants require daylight and will wither under roofs.

  • Building System: Reworked build mode featuring expanded variants, improved placement rules, snapping, and quick access to chest inventories.

  • Character Progression: The level system incorporates the three core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence.

Controls, Handheld & UI

  • Seamless Input Switching: Simultaneous support for mouse/keyboard and gamepads. HUD elements dynamically adapt to the last used input device.

  • Handheld Optimization: Automatic quality presets for ROG Ally X and Steam Deck (customizable in graphics settings).

  • Language Support: Menus and texts are available in German and English.

Multiplayer & Convention Features

  • Host/Join: LAN mode without an internet connection as well as online mode via relay/lobby. The host acts authoritatively.

  • Flow: Easy entry via the main menu for both LAN and online sessions. Fair presets can be reset in the menu if needed without deleting characters.
