Vealo is out. And it is not the app we announced

Vealo is out. And it is not the app we announced

Vealo is a clean desktop. All your icons move into a neat panel with sections and search, and the desktop itself becomes what you like: wallpapers, themes matched to their colours, effects, widgets, cursors, lighting and sounds.

The panel comes on a desktop click or a hotkey, and leaves on its own. Nothing stays behind on the desktop.

We planned to ship one version and then add things week by week. But we got so much done in the last few days that we decided to give it all away at once, on launch day. Here is what matters most.

Live wallpapers

Your own video file becomes the wallpaper and lives under the desktop icons. Every monitor can get its own video or its own picture. There is a playback speed from 0.25 to 2 and a game mode: a game starts, the video pauses and stops taking resources. On by default.

Desktop sounds

Rain, downpour, thunder, forest, lake, ocean, campfire. Sounds mix together: rain and thunder play at the same time. The loops are seamless and every sound fades in gently. You can add your own file.

Next to them lives a sleep timer, from fifteen minutes to twelve hours. When the time is up, sounds and effects fade out, and a separate switch can shut the computer down as well. Start the rain, fall asleep, and the machine turns itself off.

Setup roulette

One button builds the whole desktop: wallpaper, theme, style, effect, lighting, cursor and widgets. Three colour schemes to choose from: mono, near tones, opposite. Do not like it, put everything back with a single click.

Wallpapers per monitor

A different picture on every screen. A vertical monitor gets a crop slider: you pick which part of the picture you see, and the choice is remembered separately for each orientation. Rotate the monitor and the wallpaper is redrawn by itself.

Cursors

Your own cursors, animated ones included, and whole cursor packs: drop in a folder and the roles are assigned automatically. Arrow, busy, text, resize and the rest.

A clean desktop from the first second

Fast startup makes the icons never appear at all. They do not flash and disappear a second later, they simply never show up: the desktop is clean from the moment you sign in to Windows.

Power button

Right in the panel. A click shuts the computer down, a right click opens the choice: lock, sleep, shut down, restart. No need to open the Start menu.

Theme from the wallpaper

The app reads the colour from the dominant hue of the picture instead of averaging every pixel. Light wallpapers get a light theme. The desktop and the panel look like one whole.

FULL LIST OF CHANGES

Wallpapers

- Video wallpapers: your own video under the desktop icons, formats mp4, m4v, wmv, avi, mov

- Videos and pictures assigned per monitor

- Crop slider for vertical monitors, crop remembered per orientation

- Wallpapers redrawn after a screen rotation or a resolution change

- Game mode for video wallpapers, on by default

- Video wallpaper speed from 0.25 to 2

- Favorites: a star on the tile and its own filter in the gallery

- Wallpaper on the lock screen

- Theme colour taken from the dominant hue, light theme for light wallpapers

Sounds

- Seven ambient sounds: rain, downpour, thunder, forest, lake, ocean, campfire

- Several sounds playing at the same time

- Your own audio file: mp3, wav, m4a, flac, wma

- Seamless loop with no click at the seam

- Smooth fade in and fade out, separate volume slider

- Sleep timer from fifteen minutes to twelve hours

- Shutting the computer down when the timer ends

Panel and system

- Power button in the panel: shut down, restart, sleep, lock

- Fast startup: icons never appear from the moment you sign in

- Monitor brightness control right from the panel

- First run wizard rewritten

Widgets

- Player widget: five views and five styles, cover art, seeking, shuffle, repeat

- Widget position survives a resolution change and a monitor change

- A shared widget core: the same materials and behaviour everywhere

Cursors

- Your own .cur and .ani cursors, animated ones included

- Cursor packs with roles assigned automatically

- Deleting a cursor also removes its copy inside the app folder

Setup roulette

- Three colour schemes: mono, near tones, opposite

- Rolls the wallpaper, theme, style, effect, lighting, cursor and widgets

- No wallpaper repeats until every one of them has been used

- Undo returns the setup you had before the series, and survives a restart

Fixed

- Lock screen wallpaper: Windows substituted its own internal copy instead of the chosen picture

- The taskbar on the second monitor sometimes missed the theme repaint

- Monitor buttons did not change colour with the theme

- The brightness slider showed the previous monitor value instead of the real brightness

- The Depth style fell apart on light themes

- The roulette used gallery thumbnails as wallpapers instead of the pictures themselves

- The theme was taken from the previous picture instead of the one just applied

- The profile list did not restyle when switching to the glass style

- Wallpaper change requests were lost while the previous picture was still rendering

- The wallpaper fit cache grew without limit, it now cleans itself

- The clear history button removes the list of your own wallpapers, the files stay where they are

- A memory leak during long sessions

- Desktop icons are restored after the app exits

- A flash when switching to the glass style

- Grey text became readable on glass

- The mini panel in the preview shows its live position and moves along with the tiles

- Profiles remember and apply the player widget state

- The app no longer depends on a running Steam client
