GO PHISH DEVLOG: What's the metagame?

GO PHISH · published 1 Sep 2026, 22:00 UTC

Another month flies by, and here we are in September – the official Start of the End of the Year. Good news is, we come bearing gifts.

SO YOU PROMISED ME “ROGUE-ISH”?

Alright, alright. Let’s talk about the metagame.

In GO PHISH you have one week to pay off your $10,000 rent bill. If you fail, well, you can try again on another run. If you succeed, that’s great… but the landlord will just bump up the bill for the next week. Inflation, apparently, but I’m not sure I’d believe him.

Aaron has been hard at work for the last few weeks implementing profiles and a save system. These do the things you expect profiles and save systems do, so it’s kind of hard to write a second sentence about them, but I think on reflection this one has done quite an adequate job of fleshing out the paragraph. (It means we track your progress.)

When you load a game, you can choose one of four profiles.

‘But what do I gain from subsequent runs?’, I hear you ask. Well, plenty. Every day of the week presents two Big Phish targets, but you can only choose one, so on future runs you’ll have brand new conversations to play. In fact, we’re planning on having around twenty conversations, so that freshness should hopefully linger for a few runs. Plus, there’s every chance you’ll fail at a phish the first time around, so a new run will give you another stab at taking them down and unlocking that sweet, sweet Card Art.

Beyond that, we are working on permanent buffs and unlocks that you can hold onto from run to run. You’ll get a 3D printer where you can spend Currency to acquire objects. Sick of waiting for the merchant to randomly bring the suit or plugin that you love? If you use an equippable enough times, you’ll unlock its blueprint and be able to print one for yourself. Printing takes time, of course, so plan ahead accordingly.

Now, if you play through a week, you’ll get An Ending. But this is a rogue-ish, so if you play through it a few times, well… things might begin to happen. Possibilities arise. Information is gleaned. And with a bit of persistence, you might even get… The Ending. Well done you.

Obviously, we are not Supergiant, so GO PHISH is not gonna feature the kind of post-game content as a Hades II, but replayability was still one of our original design specs, and we feel like the game will reward those who want to sink into it. (We’re still planning an infinite zen hacking mode, too, if you just wanna play some card battles for a bit.)

People seem to have enjoyed PAX 2025, despite a serious lack of GO PHISH.

PAX AUSTRALIA

Before we go, we want to give an early heads up that – thanks to the benevolence and generosity of CODE, the New Zealand Centre of Digital Excellence – we will be showing GO PHISH on the PAX Australia show floor! Come hang with us at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from 9–11 October 2026, play the game, and say hi! It’ll be fun, and crazy, but mostly fun! We’ll remind you in the next newsletter as well.

Speaking of… next month, maybe we should talk about the art style?

Goodbye.
