From the first prototype to Gamescom 2026: how The Forgotten Ones has evolved.

Two prototypes, 18 months of feedback, and a new version that brings us closer to our first public demo.

If you’ve been following The Forgotten Ones for a while, you may have seen images and videos that don’t seem to belong to the same stage of development. That’s a correct observation.

The game has gone through different prototypes, each created to answer specific questions about gameplay, narrative, and how we present Leidy’s story. Instead of hiding that earlier work, we want to show how each version helped us build the game we’re working on now.

First question: did the core gameplay work?

In 2025 we built our first playable iteration to test the main loop and the systems that would support the experience. This version was presented at Unreal Fest 2025 and Gamescom 2025 through private sessions with publishers, investors, and professionals from different areas of the industry. The goal wasn’t to demonstrate final visual quality, but to check if actions, interactions, and systems could work together. Those sessions helped us identify which parts had potential and which needed to better communicate their connection to Leidy’s story and emotional journey. The prototype fulfilled its purpose: it showed us there was a playable foundation to keep building on.

Second question: were we conveying the right tone?

We took those learnings and developed a second iteration: a playable teaser with a more defined visual identity and presentation. This version was submitted to different festivals, and The Forgotten Ones has already been selected for several of them. Very soon we’ll be able to share where you can find the project. However, a selection doesn’t mean the work is finished, the teaser also sparked new conversations and feedback about how we presented the game. We realized it wasn’t enough to convey atmosphere and narrative intent we also needed to show more clearly what the player does, and how exploration, conversations, objects, and reconstruction form one unified experience.

A third version: bringing the best of what we learned together

The version we’re preparing now doesn’t discard everything that came before. It gathers what worked best in both prototypes and reorganizes it around a much clearer vision of the game. This new iteration focuses on Leidy’s arrival in an unfamiliar city during the 1990s. Players will explore indoor and outdoor spaces, observe traces left by others, talk with her family, and interact with objects whose reconstruction helps uncover what happened before her arrival. It’s the most solid and representative version of The Forgotten Ones we’ve built so far. We’ll present it at Gamescom 2026 to see how the full loop is understood, what emotions it generates, and what we still need to fine‑tune before letting any player try it.It won’t be the public demo yet. It will be the foundation we want to build it on.When we return from Gamescom, we’ll share what we learned, what worked, and what changes will come next. We don’t just want to show photos from the event we want to explain how those sessions directly affect the game that will reach you.If you’ve just discovered The Forgotten Ones, thank you for joining us at this stage. Add it to your wishlist and follow the game on Steam to receive our upcoming development notes.
