Spell Code SlingerZ · published · build 22852409
General
Hello SlingerZ! We got your regularly scheduled helping of new Spellcodes and updates for you all to play with! This update is brought to you by the letter “P” and features: 8 new Spellcodes, a new menu to select your playstyle, 7 new arenas featuring portals, round and arena name display, and support for different screen resolutions. Keep reading for more details or hop right into the public playtest to try everything out for yourselves! Also, we’ll stop with the “P” alliteration now.
Here is an update to our roadmap with an overview of what you can see in this update (Jul 24) and what you can expect in the next update (Aug 7).
------------------------------
New Spellcodes
Every new Spellcode in this update is an .exe (but you can expect more .config Spellcodes next update).
Bailout: Long-range bag toss. When the bag hits an opponent or the stage, swap places with the bag, leaving a burst of money where you were. On Crit, money bursts from your starting point to you.
Loaded Dice: Short range lingering dice roll. Unique effects on each number. On Crit, throw a loaded die which only results in high values.
Tele-Frag Prism: Place down a refracting prism. Your next Basic Attack teleports you across the prism, dealing damage at your new location.
Get Over Here: Long-range Rope Dart which pulls in opponents. Hitting the stage with this Spellcode will launch you forward.
Jigoku Flash Step: Long-range kunai. On-hit, mark the opponent. Your next cast teleports you behind the marked opponent.
Hell Wave Fist: Long-range energy blast. When Demon Aura is C rank or higher, this Spellcode is enhanced.
Hourglass Of Chronos: Place down an hourglass. Upon re-casting, or after the hourglass runs out, go back to your previous position and health, dealing damage at your new location when you arrive.
Helm Of Hades: Place down a helmet shrouded in darkness. While inside the shroud, dodge all attacks from opponents outside the shroud. Gain 1 Rep when you dodge a projectile.

Code Mode Menu
We have been aware of the fact that Spell Code SlingerZ has a very unique control scheme that can be a big ask for new players. We still feel that the mechanic of casting spells by inputting cheat codes is core to the game’s identity so we’ve been testing out some ways of adding a simpler control scheme while keeping the feeling of casting spells the same. The culmination of this testing is the new “Punk Mode”.
When casting a Spellcode in Punk Mode, all you need to do is hold down the code button, tap a direction, and then release the code button. Using Punk Mode will make your Spellcode cooldowns longer to keep it balanced with the classic control scheme.
Technically, Punk Mode has been in the game for a little bit now but it was hidden away as a togglable option in the Controls menu. Now, selecting between Synthesizer and Punk Modes has its very own snazzy new UI.
Whenever a player joins a game (whether locally or online) they will be prompted to select between the classic control scheme (called “Synthesizer Mode”), and the new control scheme (“Punk Mode”). This makes it so that players who prefer different control schemes can still enjoy the game together.
------------------------------
Round and arena name display
At the start of each round, the announcer will announce the round number in the center of the screen. Then, a small box at the bottom of the screen will briefly appear showing the name of the current arena.
------------------------------
Screen resolution changing support
Within the Display section of the Pause Menu, you can now change the screen resolution of the game. We’ve also added more options for those with higher and lower resolution monitors. This menu was present before but now it has greater functionality.
------------------------------
Arenas
3 new 2 player arenas:
Clover
No Floor (looping)
Mini Diagonal
2 new 3-4 player arenas:
Frog
Diagonal
2 new 4 player arenas:
Fight Club
Crazy Portals

Patch Notes
Rework to Demon Aura display. Instead of being a number from 0 to 100, Demon Aura is now a letter rank. These ranks (from lowest to highest) are: D, C, B, A, S, and X. Functionally, nothing has changed but this new naming scheme is meant to support the fantasy of pulling off flashy combos with the DemonX collective.
Punk Mode:
Cooldown penalty: +25% > +.5 sec per spell input.
Developer Note: This change in the cooldown penalty is to better matchup the cost taken by using punk mode, as previously punk mode users would have an unintended disadvantage when using Spellcodes with high cooldowns but few inputs (Helm of Hades for example), and an unintended advantage when using Spellcodes with lower cooldowns but many inputs ( e.g. Might of Zeus). This change should be mostly un-feelable for the majority of Spellcodes (as input count typically somewhat matches cooldowns), but was made to address the outliers.
Mine Crafter:
Cooldown: 0 sec > 1 sec
Max mines out: 1 > 3
Mines can now be armored through
Mines are destroyed when their owner is hit
Dev Note: The previous implementation of Minecrafter had both an issue with a lack of fantasy fulfillment and enabling degenerate strategies, (e.g., as long as the user slides before getting hit more often than not they would win the trade vs an opponent that hit them due to mines persisting upon taking damage). These changes aim to make the spellcode more satisfying to use, while having more counterplay to play against.
Quarter Report:
Non-Crit lifespan: 30 frames > 45
Dev Note: In quarter report's new position outside of the starter Spellcode slot, it has some room for improvements to help it stand out against its competitors. Namely, this change aims to lessen the gap between the viability of non-crit vs crit versions of this Spellcode
Hellish Riposte:
Effect Damage: 10 > 20
Demon Aura Ranks gained: 1 > 2
Dev Note: This Spellcode's reward was far too low given the difficulty of achieving its condition, so we've greatly increased it.
Aegis Of Athena:
Effect Removed: "Upon landing a successful parry, your next cast gains Super Armor and grants +1 Rep on hit while the perfect armor is active."
New Effect: "Your parry reflects projectiles."
Dev Note: This change aims to both help differentiate the niche's of this Spellcode vs Hellish Riposte, as well as allow more clarity in the use of the Spellcode's VFX.
Additionally, many Spellcodes have had their hitstun fine tuned for consistency's sake.
