Draw Steel Codex 0.0.851 is Now Available
2-Minute Tabletop Maps Are in the Codex
We're excited to announce our partnership with 2-Minute Tabletop! Their huge library of hand-drawn battle maps is now available right inside the Codex, and 2-Minute Tabletop Patreon patrons get access to the maps, and the props that come with them, as part of their membership.
- 342 maps, over 1,000 looks: Most maps come in several versions, like Day and Night, Rain, Snow, Flooded, Ablaze, Haunted and more. Switch between them with a click, and each map starts on its calmest daytime look.
- Multi-floor buildings: 36 maps come with basements, cellars, upper storeys and rafters already set up as floors. Changing a map's look changes every floor together.
- Ceilings set for you: Caves, dungeons and interiors come with a ceiling. Outdoor maps don't have one.
- Props for your maps: 90 maps come with their own props, nearly 9,500 objects in all: shop shelves, furniture, clutter, tree pieces, walkways and more. When you're on one of these maps, the Director's Objects panel shows an Objects for this map folder at the top, with the props already scaled to the map. Props you place are copied into your game, so they stay put and every player sees them. Props that come in several colours or materials are grouped into one object, and you switch between them with its Appearance.
- Props Included: In the map browser, maps that come with props have a Props Included badge. The map details show how many props there are, and you can hover over that line to preview them.
What each Patreon tier gets:
- Bronze Supporter: every map, in its regular and night looks.
- Silver Supporter: everything in Bronze, plus each map's props.
- Gold Supporter and above: every look of every map, plus props.
How to get them: Open Create Map and choose Map Library in the sidebar, then pick 2-Minute Tabletop. If you haven't connected Patreon yet, click Link Patreon... on any locked map, or go to Settings → Account → Link Patreon Account. We only read which creators you support, never your payment details. A new pledge unlocks within seconds, and you don't need to reopen the dialog.
More Maps
- The Dark Heart of the Wood maps: Four maps from The Dark Heart of the Wood have joined the MCDM Encounter Maps pack: The Cat and Mutton, Chapel of Saint Maernoth, Shrine Entrance and Shrine of the Green. The Cat and Mutton and Shrine of the Green have several floors. That brings the pack to 41 maps.
- Full-size map viewer: In Create Map and the map browser, click a map preview to open a near-fullscreen viewer. Scroll to zoom, drag to pan, and double-click to see the map at 1:1.
New Features
- Rivals in the monster builder: The monster builder now supports the Rival Ancestries template, with 12 ancestry options (High Elf and Wode Elf are now separate). It adds Rival Abilities and Rival Languages choices, plus the Rivals overview text and art from Monsters. A Rival Abilities swap lets you pick a signature ability from the stat block, the class or a kit.
- Rivalry: Every Rival now gets Rivalry as a "!" trigger when Draw Steel starts, instead of an automatic prompt. It doesn't use a triggered action.
- Operated objects and the Field Ballista: Some map objects can now be operated by a creature standing next to them. The first is the Field Ballista, a Level 2 siege engine. An adjacent creature can Release Bolt, Reload and Spot with it, turn it to face a target, or hitch it and move it 3 squares. Any adjacent creature can also try to Deactivate it with an Agility test. The action bar shows an Operating mode with a Stop button.
- Throwable Candelabra: The Candelabra now burns. An adjacent creature can throw it as a maneuver into an empty square within 3. A map object that offers only one ability uses it straight away when clicked.
- Fire spreads through oil: A burning object that lands in Flammable Oil sets it alight. At the end of each round, Burning Oil spreads into adjacent Flammable Oil.
- Ceiling clinging: A creature that can climb and is already up at the ceiling can climb again to cling upside down and move along it. Moving down, being force moved, teleporting or falling prone ends it.
- Default journal stylesheet: The Director can set a Default Journal Stylesheet in game settings. Every journal page that doesn't have its own stylesheet uses it, for everyone. A page can still choose Plain.
- Encounters in the journal: Drag saved encounters from the Encounters panel into journal pages.
- Summons and initiative: Summon has a new New initiative group option. It puts creatures summoned mid-combat into initiative on the caster's side. Before, those summons never joined combat.
- Status bar option: A new Status Bar Shows Tile Info option sits at the top of the map overlay menu. Turn it off to show a steady map and floor readout instead of the details of the tile under your cursor.
- PDF viewer: Two-page spreads now pair the pages the way the printed MCDM books do, with the cover on its own on the left.
- Compendium importer: The import dialog has a review step that lists each item with its warnings and status. Triggered abilities show as cards in the review.
- Malice sound: A new sound plays when the Malice banner appears.
- Stone Wall presets: The walls palette has three new Stone Wall presets.
Journal & Negotiations
- Negotiation pages: The read view now shows the negotiation's portrait and scene image.
- Seeding a negotiation: Seed from a Sample Negotiator is now a dropdown at the top of the editor. It shows which sample you used and what the last seed changed, and it asks before replacing motivations or pitfalls. Re-seeding no longer leaves the old NPC's description behind.
- Scene Notes: Negotiations have a new free-form Scene Notes section.
- Longer text: Negotiation text fields are no longer cut off at 256 characters. Long text boxes in journal forms now grow to fit their text.
- Flow view: The Flow view now shows every exit from a page, so a branching scene no longer looks like a straight line.
- Templates: A page created from a template now keeps all of the template's settings, including its stylesheet, not just its text.
- Saving: The journal editor shows its save status (All changes saved, Saving..., Unsaved changes or Save failed!) and has a Save button. Ctrl+S works in the journal editor again.
- Fixed text typed into a newly added negotiation motivation or pitfall, or a new montage challenge, being lost after autosave.
- Fixed encounters with no monsters, or a broken encounter, creating blank journal pages.
- Fixed an autosave error that kept repeating on empty documents.
Classes & Abilities
- Purge Save Ends: These abilities now also end save-ends effects such as Burning, not just conditions. Revitalizing Grace has a new version that can remove prone instead.
- Damage that triggers abilities: Abilities that use "the triggering damage" now count the full damage dealt, even when temporary Stamina absorbed part of it. This affects Feedback Loop, the Power Ballad roll, Trick of the Eye, Life Drinker, Expend Envy, Shrouded Memory, Brittlebreaker, War Domain Piety, Foesense Lenses and Soul Rancor.
- Soul Rancor now triggers at 3 or more, as written.
- Persistent Magic now counts the total damage taken in a turn, not each hit on its own.
- Thunderclap's I Can Take It now moves half the damage over before immunity and weakness apply.
- Orc Passionate Artisan gives +2 on project rolls for your chosen crafting skills, and you no longer need to be proficient in them. The option list is no longer empty.
- Orc Relentless now triggers when the strike kills any creature, not only the primary target.
- Human Can't Take Hold now ignores only difficult terrain created by magic or psionics. Any other effects of that terrain still apply.
- Tactician Mastermind: With Overwatch, the ally you direct now gets their free strike as an Overwatch Strike trigger.
- Tactician Mark: The extra damage still reaches the squad when the marked minion dies. The extra damage option no longer appears against a dead target.
- Censor: Look On My Work and Despair has been reworked. It Is Justice You Fear and Sentenced are now fully implemented. Shield of the Righteous now uses the right text, prompt and altitude for each tier.
- Conduit: With Lightfall, your allies teleport first and then you teleport. Pillar of Holy Fire has its tier 3 text, holy damage and fire effect fixed.
- Elementalist: Translated Through Flame now uses the Elementalist's characteristics, and its fire damage hits each enemy next to the target's new space. Subvert the Green Within can now target any creature. Mushroom Growth is now called Invigorating Growth.
- Talent: Greater Kinetic Grip now uses Reason for its power roll. Spirit Sword's text now says its extra 3 damage also hits you and can't be reduced.
- Reaver See Through Your Tricks: The double edge now applies to Read Person instead of Lie.
- Shadow Night Watch: The missing passive text is back.
- Windwalk: The +2 speed now applies only while flying, and the flight needs just 5 Victories.
- Fade From Existence no longer applies a double bane, and a 1-hour version has been added.
- Summoner: Characteristic increases and Minion Improvements no longer overwrite the picks you made at earlier levels.
- Action log: The log now shows the Recovery bonus from Blessing of Life and the collision damage bonus from Primordial Strength.
- Status icons: Hovering a status icon such as Windwalk now shows its rules text.
- Many fully automated class abilities and features have been checked and upgraded from Silver to Gold implementation.
Monsters
- Demon Bale Eye's Demonwarp Tears: Warped now ends on a successful save instead of lasting forever.
- Ghoul Leap: deals free strike damage, only knocks size 1 targets prone, and has the correct range and target text.
- Gnoll Abyssal Summoner: Summoning lets you choose where the summons appear, and has the correct keyword and range.
- War Dog Arachnite Longarm Shrikegun: You now choose the damage type.
- Rival Tactician: Its reaction abilities now use a triggered action.
- Monster AI now waits for the heroes to react to something a monster provokes, such as a Tactician directing an ally with Overwatch.
Traps & Objects
- Snare Trap rework: A snared creature is now restrained and left hanging, and creatures can attack the snare to break it. There's a new Snared effect.
- Net Trap rework: The Net Trap has a new Netted effect. One creature's successful save frees everyone caught in the same net.
- Incense Censer: A new map object that can be swung.
- Targetable objects with special collision rules now also take normal collision damage.
Combat
- Revert Turn now goes back to the start of the turn. Before, reverting early in round 2 could make everyone Surprised again.
- Hero Tokens are now refreshed by the Director's client, so everyone stays in sync.
- "You cannot shift" now says why, for example because you're Slowed.
- Effects from several casters, such as Pain for Pain, now remember every attacker, and hovering the effect draws a line to each one.
- Teleport takes height into account, so you can teleport into the air above another creature.
- Strict targeting: With strict targeting on, you can no longer pick a single target you have no line of effect to. The targeting arrow says No Line of Effect.
- Flying creatures are only affected by a zone when they are at the zone's height.
- Monsters spawned from the bestiary or the Encounters panel, and pasted tokens, now stand on the ground, including down in pits and up on ledges.
- A revived hero, for example one brought back with Hero Tokens on death, is no longer removed from the map.
- Damage you deal to yourself, such as standing in your own burning oil, now respects your own immunities.
- Deleting the creature whose turn it is now ends its turn instead of leaving initiative stuck.
- Trigger cards now pick the next valid option when the first one doesn't apply. Options you can't use are greyed out with the reason.
- Trigger costs written as formulas, such as "Level + 1", no longer show as free.
- Make Captain only appears when all the selected minions are in the same squad.
- Subtracted d4s were being counted as boons. This is fixed.
Map Tools
- Wall heights: Height-limited walls now measure their height from the ground beneath the wall, so cover, line of sight and solid terrain are correct on raised or sunken ground.
- Map Markup: Each wall type remembers its own height, so drawing a 1-high fence no longer makes your next walls 1 high.
- Map Markup: Zones have a New Patch option for separate patches that sit side by side. Escape now cancels a half-drawn stroke first.
- Map Markup: Dragging points can no longer make a solid disappear.
- Map effects now show on upper floors instead of being hidden behind them.
- Heat shimmer no longer shows through from other floors.
- Object aura labels now sit on the shape's outline for Cubes, Lines and Locations.
- Loading a map no longer leaves the Director stuck on a hidden floor where clicks did nothing.
Other Fixes
- Adventure updates no longer reset your campaign. When an adventure is updated, only maps and characters you haven't touched are updated, and new content is added. Your campaign in progress is left alone, including after you restore a backup.
- Offline campaigns: Backups of an Offline campaign now come with it when you move it online.
- Purchased modules: Premium modules you own, whether you bought them or got them through Patreon, are no longer hidden in the module browser.
- Drag Camera: Binding Drag Camera to the side mouse buttons works again.
- Disguises: A disguised token, such as a Stormwight in animal form, no longer overwrites its saved appearance with the disguise art.
- Map tools: Dragging a token while another tool is in use on the map, such as placing summons, no longer starts a normal move with opportunity attack warnings.
- After pressing F5: Existing creatures now use the reloaded rules. For example, minion squad free strikes no longer hit only one target.
- PDF contents: Contents entries in the Draw Steel Encounters and The Summoner PDFs now go to the right page. Some used to open page 1.
- Monster appearances: Random appearances no longer pick a look the monster doesn't have.
- Images: Images in panels opened while assets were still loading no longer stay blank.
- Monster Info: The stat block no longer runs off the screen on wide displays.
- Project rolls: Projects with no source language, such as Hone Career Skill, no longer tick "Unknown Language" and add a double bane.
- Conditions menu: Concealment now appears in the conditions menu. Dazzled, Invisible From and Stoned no longer appear.
- Search: The title bar search now keeps the campaign filter when you click elsewhere.
- Time of Day no longer accepts minutes past 59.
- Whispers: The /w whisper command suggests users again.
- Followers are no longer counted as players.
- Kits: Kits such as Boren now display correctly.
- Re-rolls keep the roll's silent setting.
- Crash and error fixes:
- Rolling on a table that points to a deleted table.
- Drawing initiative.

- A character sheet whose hero has a missing class.
- Clearing an ability's duration.
- The minion squad HUD.
- Shadow elf monster AI.
