DeskLayer — Quick Patch: Easier to start + smart editing

New here? Take the tour

  • First time you open DeskLayer, a short guided tour points out the wallpaper, taskbar, and widgets.
  • One-click "Apply a starter look" sets up a full starter scene — a taskbar, a live wallpaper, and a few widgets — and saves it as a Preset you can tweak.
  • The taskbar editor, widget editor, and on-screen designer each get their own quick tour the first time you open them.

Wallpaper: turn it off, and get yours back

  • New "Turn off wallpaper" in the wallpaper card's menu. It stops DeskLayer's wallpaper and restores your own Windows background instead of leaving it blank.

Editor: snap things into place

  • Smart alignment guides in all three editors. Drag a tile for an alignment line through nearby tiles plus a spacing pill when gaps match. Drag a group and it snaps to the tiles around it. Resize snaps to a neighbour's size with a live W x H readout. Hold Alt for free placement.
  • Redesigned Layers panel. Rows are thumbnail, name, an eye and an x — no more tiny arrows. Drag a row and it lifts onto a chip that follows your cursor while its old spot stays open and a line shows where it lands. Right-click a layer for an "Arrange layer" order menu.

On-screen designer

  • The Add buttons that sometimes wouldn't click are fixed, and a tile you add now appears right away.
  • Media loads properly (no more blank tile), and the "Image" tile is now "Media".
  • Shapes (rectangle and circle) style fully now — colour, corner radius, and border — and the swatch shows the real colour for transparent fills.

Report a problem

  • New "Report a problem" in Settings, plus a gentle prompt if the app ever recovers from a hiccup. It bundles a diagnostics log so issues actually get found and fixed. You choose what to send, and it never includes personal files.

Fixes

  • Turning the taskbar on is far less disruptive. It no longer nudges your desktop icons around or resizes your open windows more than once.
  • A left or right (vertical) taskbar no longer makes the tiles disappear. It falls back to the bottom safely, and Ctrl+Shift+D reopens the hub if you get locked out.
  • The tray now shows a wired icon on an Ethernet connection instead of a Wi-Fi glyph.

Languages

  • The new welcome tour is localized across English, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (BR), Russian, and Chinese.

To be completely honest, I couldn't bring myself to actively promote or hype up the app while knowing a critical issue was still affecting daily productivity. As a solo developer, putting on a…
