Combat Balancing
The biggest change in this update is one you cannot see directly: the tower no longer scales to you. Every floor's enemies now have fixed stats, the same for every soul who stands there, measured from what a typical climber actually carries at that depth. The old system quietly read your power and kept pace with it, which is why strong climbs felt samey and weak ones felt punished. That whole mirror is gone.
Two things follow from this decision. First, a breakthrough now completes the climb. Pass a tribulation and you return to base in triumph to consolidate your new realm; the next run enters your new frontier fresh. No more coasting through the band above on the strength you brought to the gate. The two summit moments still play out in the tower itself: crossing into Immortal Ascension past floor 1000, and cresting the Ninth Heaven.
The triumph pays properly too: every gate now awards comprehension on the scale of the realm it opens, enough to fund a real investment round at your new frontier. Souls saved before this update receive their current realm's gate pay once, on load, so nobody is left holding the last realm's wallet. And the band guardian's draft is now a single relic that follows you through the breakthrough into your next climb, instead of dying with the run that won it.
Second, the tower will beat you, and that is the design. The curve deliberately climbs faster than one run can snowball. When you fall, the failure pays out comprehension, your base spends it, and the next climb goes farther. Failing the same heart-demon also toughens you against that realm's demon specifically, so a lost gate is never nothing.
Your head starts are honest too. Talents, origins, tempering and banked strength arrive whole, never trimmed. A big head start moves your first wall a few floors up. The wall still comes.
Fights also last longer for honest reasons: enemies carry about a fifth more health across the board, elites are hard fights rather than armor walls, and enemy damage finally honors its intended pace per round instead of running far over it deep. Nothing caps your blows; the numbers are just real now.
A player who invests steadily runs about 25 to 40 climbs to the true summit; a soul that never spends never leaves the second realm.
Fights threaten you from floor one
- About a third of ordinary foes at every band carry one telegraphed art: a wind-up you answer or eat, a shield rhythm that rewards a timed burst, a grasping palm that drains your qi and punishes a slow kill. Past the early bands the full kit is in play, self-healing included. Elites always carry one. However strong your build, a foe with a move wants an answer, not a bigger number.
- Two fights in five carry a trait whose price no kill speed avoids: Stormclad strikes before you can move, Thorn-boned bites you as it dies, Venomous leaves a wound that outlasts the fight. A build strong enough to one-shot the floor still bleeds for it, and all three now cost about the same at every depth.
- Spirit veins in the early bands mend less than they used to. Eat two wind-ups and the third fight is a real decision.
Your last stand is yours
Auto-resolve no longer loses a fight silently. When the auto outcome would be a loss, the game discards it entirely, dice included, and pauses the fight for your hands. The manual fight that follows can be won, and usually is: fresh rolls, your timing on Qi Surge and Core Release, and not striking into a raised guard are worth more than the auto-resolver's habits. Some fights are truly lost. Those are the tower telling you to go home and invest.
The fights play out
Hand-fought combat now animates the way the auto playback does. Cast an art and the exchange plays out blow by blow: your strike lands with its sound and its damage number, the health bar falls with it, and the foe's answer comes a beat later. The buttons wait while the exchange plays, a killing blow gets its moment before the rewards take over, and the panel settles in like every other card instead of snapping into place.
And the breakthrough earns its scene: pass a tribulation and the lightning set-piece plays out in full before you descend, with the climb's payoff card after it. That card had quietly stopped appearing when a climb ended at a gate; it is back for every ending, triumphant or not.
The whole economy climbs with you
- Strength tempered from trials, strength granted by events, and the comprehension a defeat teaches all scale with the band you are standing in. Floor 300 pays on floor 300's scale.
- Everything you bank at base arrives at your frontier multiplied by your realm. Between-run investment is the bridge to deep floors, and now it actually reaches.
- Foundation Technique and Iron Body now stack to 24, Consolidation to 40. The rising costs are the leash. Comprehension always has something worth buying, at every realm.
- Refusing a curio draft now pays comprehension scaled to the floor you refused it on. The empty bowl is a real choice on floor 700, not just floor 7. Refusing a rare pays more, the Ascetic still multiplies it, and the draft card quotes the exact amount you would gain.
Deep is a climb again, and floors 1000 and up mean it
With the economy scaling honestly, a well-run soul was arriving deep well over the curve, and the Boundless had turned into a victory lap. We measured that surplus at every band and folded it back into the tower. Enemies from the fourth band on now stand where the real median stands, on both health and attack. Past the summit you will fight for it, and the fights want your hands.
The Heavens' Trials hold
Every optional trial was run through the wringer with the new tower. All of them are winnable. Sevenfold Heavens and War Without End sit right at the edge of what a mortal-side soul can carry, which is where their reward text always claimed they were.
The tower has more to say
- Story pacing holds its rhythm now that climbs are shorter. The weave's clock used to restart with every run, so a beat landed a dozen floors into nearly every climb. It now counts the floors you have walked across your whole life, and a beat arrives every 12 to 25 of them, wherever you happen to be standing.
- Story scenes wait for the floors they were written for. Beats authored for the deep tower no longer fire on a first-realm climb because the rotation said it was their turn; the turn passes to a scene that fits where you stand, and the deep one meets you when you climb to it.
- Sixty-odd new event scenes across the climb: answers for who you are, answers for the path you chose, companions with habits and not just arcs, and scenes that read your sect rank from outer hall to elder. A scene that only makes sense once per climb now fires once per climb.
- A keystone can be unmade at the peddler now, stones only, and the price climbs steeply with each unmaking. The warning on the card stays honest.
- Event treasures are offered, not forced. The Hermit's Bowl can hear no.
- Guardians and reckonings hit boss-grade now, and the guardian's health bar reports honestly instead of flattering you.
Fixes
- A world's fate is decided once, when that life begins, and the story remembers it. Frozen sagas from before this fix heal on load.
- The tower's named figures no longer borrow a stranger's scene. Eleven event beats were putting a lead's face on someone else's lines. Strangers keep their own faces now.
- One press of Space does one thing. The outcome card owns the keys while it is up, including over a curio draft, where the two panels used to defer to each other until neither answered at all.
- The game runs in exactly one window.
- The River-Script Page said 8 when it meant 8%. Seven Ledger relics were missing their art prompts. Mirror-boned's rebound floors at 15%, as its card says.
- New souls, and the Reincarnator in particular, start where their origin says they start.
Thank you for everyone playing! Hope this rebalance is what many of you have been asking for, if there is any feedback please let me know! Otherwise, have fun!
