OMEGA: The Dead Planet · published
The Arctic is designed to feel like a living environment rather than a static level.
Weather conditions and times of day are dynamic. After certain periods of time, the weather can change naturally, while lighting and environmental conditions gradually transition into another curated time of day.
This is not a fully simulated day/night cycle. Instead, the system allows the world to change while still preserving the carefully designed lighting and atmosphere of each time period.
You may leave the HUB under a clear daytime sky and later find yourself riding through snowfall as the light begins to fade.
Temperature has a small gameplay effect, but OMEGA is not intended to be a hardcore survival game.
The goal is not to constantly punish the player for choosing the “wrong” outfit.
If Jessica is underdressed in cold conditions, she may occasionally shiver, react to the temperature and complain about it. Extreme exposure also causes a small stamina regeneration debuff.
The same logic will work in the opposite direction in warmer biomes.
If Jessica is wearing too much clothing in hot conditions, she may react to the heat, complain about being overdressed and suffer a similarly small stamina regeneration penalty.
So clothing has a practical purpose in addition to appearance, while still leaving the player plenty of freedom over what Jessica wears.
The philosophy behind the system is simple:
the environment should matter, but it should not become annoying.
Jessica will let you know when your clothing choices make absolutely no sense.
The Arctic open area contains resources scattered across abandoned facilities, outposts, wreckage and other points of interest.
Current loot includes:
ammunition
grenades
healing supplies
fabric
chemicals
tools and scrap
clothing blueprints
weapon attachments
Loot in open areas is partially randomized, so revisiting the same location will not always mean finding exactly the same resources waiting in exactly the same places.
The intention is to encourage exploration rather than turning the world into a memorized shopping route.
Interior locations such as mines, caves, laboratories and military facilities are handled differently. These areas are designed much more deliberately around survival-horror pacing, enemy encounters and available resources.
You can return to them.
Just don’t expect them to be empty when you do.
The resources you collect feed into OMEGA’s crafting system.
You will eventually be able to craft things such as:
clothing
equipment
ammunition
healing items
grenades
Crafting, inventory management and equipment progression will be covered in much more detail later.
For now, the important part is that exploration should consistently feed back into gameplay rather than simply filling your inventory with meaningless junk.
Combat in OMEGA is still built around the idea that encounters should matter.
Ammunition is a resource, but running low does not automatically mean you are stuck. Depending on the situation, you may be able to craft more supplies, avoid an encounter, retreat, or simply exhaust an enemy rather than fighting everything head-on.
The Arctic gradually changes around Jessica.
Weather shifts.
The light changes.
Resources appear in different places.
Jessica reacts to the environment.
And sometimes the safest-looking building contains exactly the ammunition you need.
Unfortunately, something else may be waiting inside too.
More soon. Kerangor
