It’s been one week since the release of version 0.9.5, which introduced a massive number of changes, and we've received an overwhelming amount of feedback from all of you. Thank you again and as always for your dedicated thoughts and input!
Major system overhauls significantly redefined how the game feels, and we are aware that many of you were surprised by the shifts in gameplay. We've received an extraordinary amount of feedback in particular regarding the Ghost and Resurrection mechanics. We are taking every single piece of feedback into consideration, and we intend to make the necessary adjustments and improvements.
First, here is some comparison data between v0.9.4 and v0.9.5:
Win Rates (Wolves vs. Lambs)
0.9.4
0.9.5
Wolves 29.7% vs. Lambs 70.3%
Wolves 40.3% vs. Lambs 59.7%
Harbor Opening Rate
0.9.4
0.9.5
21.8%
50.7%
One of our concerns was that Wolves had a hard time winning, and we saw some improvement, partly due to increasing the ratio of Wolves per match. Additionally, with the revised Guardian system and longer match times resulting from Resurrection, far more matches are now reaching the Harbor phase.
However, while this data shows positive momentum, we fully acknowledge that overall player satisfaction dropped in certain areas. Regarding Ghosts and Resurrection, there were aspects we failed to thoroughly test and evaluate in a live player environment, leaving us with a wide range of issues to address and fine-tune.
① Transition to Ghost Mode is Too Fast (Exposing Wolves Too Easily)
Currently, killed players become Ghosts almost instantly, allowing Lambs to immediately inspect their own corpses and identify the killer. While we want to maintain the core idea that playing carelessly (leaving behind mountains of clues) is bad for Wolves, even cautious Wolves aren't given enough time to clean up evidence before the victim's Ghost appears. This punishes careful play entirely, and from the Lamb's perspective, identifying the killer instantly takes away what makes KILLER INN unique—gradually narrowing down suspects with clues—and pushes the game toward a shallow experience.
We will adjust the timing between being killed and becoming a Ghost so that careful, tactical Wolves get a fair chance to hide their tracks.
② Disparity Between Lamb Ghost and Wolf Ghost Gameplay
After being killed, a Lamb Ghost can collect a good amount of clues—from their own corpse, scuff marks, bullet casings, and more. Spending 45 seconds as a Ghost picking up as many clues as possible directly leads to identifying Wolves, getting damage bonuses against them, and massive Gold gains upon respawning. As a comeback mechanic, we feel this is working roughly as intended, but adjustments are needed, as Lambs can currently collect too many clues.
On the other hand, the Wolf Ghost experience has significant room for improvement. While concealing clues offers tactical value by lowering risks for yourself and teammates, it feels underwhelming compared to Lambs. There are also times where there aren't many clues to conceal in the first place, leading to boring downtime where Wolf Ghosts simply wander around the map.
We've received countless ideas from the community on this. Should Wolf Ghosts be allowed to respawn when they want? Should they be able to directly disrupt living Lambs? Would granting resources for concealing clues make it feel more rewarding and fairer? We are actively debating these possibilities within the development team.
③ Dragged-Out Climax Phase
Currently, every player has the ability to resurrect once, and this right is retained even after the Harbor opens or during showdown. This creates awkward 45-second "waiting for the enemy to respawn" moments right at the climax of a match, cutting off momentum. Furthermore, respawned players often can't turn the tides anyway, making the respawn feel like a frustrating chore that only delays an inevitable outcome.
We originally kept respawning available after the Harbor opened out of fear that, without it, Wolves would stop killing Lambs in the early-to-mid game (reasoning that it's better to wait and kill them once in the Harbor rather than risk revealing themselves early). We are continuing discussions on how to adjust this, so it doesn't drag out unnecessarily.
④ Widening Disparity in Kill Distribution
While eliminating the opposing team remains the main victory condition in KILLER INN, the addition of Resurrection and the increased Wolf ratio raised the total number of kills needed to win for both sides. If we define a team's "Kill Quota" as the average number of kills required per player, the number of required kills per player increased.
Version / Ratio
Wolf Kill Quota
Lamb Kill Quota
0.9.4 (33% Wolf Ratio)
2 Kills
0.5 Kills
0.9.5 (40% Wolf Ratio + Resurrection)
3 Kills
1.3 Kills
But, kills are never distributed evenly. Skilled and experienced players are now getting far more kills than before, while less experienced players feel the skill gap more acutely. A system where a tiny fraction of players monopolizes all the kills—leaving everyone else feeling like bystanders—is a long-standing issue in KILLER INN. With total kill counts going up, addressing this problem has become even more critical.
⑤ Second Chances That Feel Like "I'm Just Going to Die Again"
Our goal with Resurrection was to give more players a sense that they were actively participating in the match outcome. We wanted to eliminate the frustration of spending time gathering evidence and gear only to get killed in a split second with nothing to show for it.
However, because this second chance is granted equally to everyone, skilled and experienced players benefit from it the most, racking up even higher kill counts. For beginners or casual players, these top players become even more overwhelming obstacles (enemies you have to defeat twice, or can't even defeat once).
In the current Casual Match environment, Resurrection for non-hardcore combatants isn't giving them the motivational "Alright, let's do this!" second chance we hoped for. Instead, it feels like a negative loop: "I'm just going to get killed by the same player again" or "My bad experience just got doubled." We completely understand why players feel it would be better to die once and move on to the next match, and we recognize this needs serious rework.
At its core, this stems from a mismatch in our Casual Match environment where skill gaps are too large. However, we believe refining the Ghost and Resurrection mechanics will improve the overall experience.
⑥ The Spawn-Killing Problem
To win under current rules, reducing enemy headcount as quickly as possible is the most effective strategy. As a result, we've seen players actively target freshly respawned victims (spawn-killing or tracking specific targets). Due to how the tracking system and post-resurrection immunity work, executing a kill right after someone respawns has proven far too easy. Getting insta-killed by the exact same player right after reviving completely ruins the point of a second chance.
Additionally, party tactics, such as designating a single target for focus-firing or using the Journalist's "Magic Map" ability, were not tested thoroughly enough in coordinated team play scenarios. KILLER INN does not support or condone spawn-killing, and we are looking into measures to prevent it.
Having recognized these critical issues, we still intend to keep the Ghost and Resurrection mechanics, and are not planning to remove them at the current time. We will thoroughly rework them to address these challenges head-on.
As mentioned in the 0.9.5 patch notes, these features were introduced to solve foundational issues KILLER INN was suffering from. Simply removing them would cause those original problems to return.
Thanks to your feedback and play data in the 0.9.5 environment, we were able to pinpoint these structural flaws, and we believe that addressing these issues head-on through iteration and adjustment will ultimately lead to a much better game. We humbly ask for your patience as we keep these features live to test further adjustments and work towards improvements.
What KILLER INN strives to be is an exhilarating blend of high-stakes action and subtle deception.
It is not meant to be a game where only players with godlike agility and skills, or exceptional aim dominate. However, with version 0.9.5, our testing and tuning regarding environmental changes proved to be insufficient, inadvertently shifting the game toward mechanical reliance and Team Deathmatch-style play.
The current state of Casual Matches is not the vision we hold for KILLER INN, and we will continue to push forward in our development until we reach the true potential of what KILLER INN should be. We would like to thank you all for your continued support and patience.
