Over the past weeks, we’ve been reworking progression, expanding dungeon generation, adding new content, and improving existing systems. Here are some of the biggest changes you’ll be able to experience in the new demo.
The demo now features two playable characters, each with their own starting biome, progression tree, and playstyle.
The Mercenary is an experienced fighter who ventures into the dungeon in search of fortune after growing tired of working for wealthy lords. His progression focuses primarily on weapons, combat skills, and improving his mastery of different ways to fight.
The Dwarf Miner has returned to the abandoned mines hoping to strike it rich once again. His playstyle revolves around the pickaxe - both as a weapon and a tool - as well as upgrades focused more heavily on toughness and strengthening the character himself.
The goal is for each character to offer a different approach to exploring, fighting, and building your run.
The demo now includes two distinct biomes.
The Mercenary begins his journey in the Ancient Catacombs, while the Dwarf starts in the Abandoned Mines. However, both characters will eventually be able to reach and explore both areas during their runs.
The biomes are more than just visual changes. Each one comes with its own enemies, hazards, loot, and some unique gameplay elements.
Dungeon generation has received a major update.
Rooms are no longer limited to simple rectangular layouts and can now appear in many different shapes and configurations, making exploration less predictable from run to run.
You may also occasionally encounter branching paths and additional doors inside the dungeon. These optional routes can lead to extra encounters or hide valuable treasure.
Each character now has their own individual progression tree designed around their strengths and playstyle.
Progression is also becoming less linear. While unlocking new nodes, you’ll sometimes have to choose between different upgrades - and picking one may permanently block another.
Choose carefully, because your decisions can significantly shape your build for the rest of the run.
Some items can now provide additional bonuses when equipped together with related pieces.
This adds another layer to building your character and gives you more reasons to think about equipment combinations instead of simply choosing the item with the biggest individual stat increase.
The merchant has also received an upgrade.
You can expect more items, more build archetypes, and more choices when deciding how to spend your hard-earned loot.
Alongside the larger systems, we’ve continued polishing the game based on feedback from the previous playtest.
This includes improvements such as key rebinding, localization for multiple languages, various smaller quality-of-life changes, and plenty of bug fixes.
The previous playtest gave us a lot of useful feedback, and many of these changes are a direct result of what we learned from it.
This isn’t the full list of everything that has changed, but we wanted to give you a look at some of the biggest additions coming to the updated DepthLoot demo.
We’re looking forward to seeing what builds you create, which character you prefer, and what you discover in the depths.
