MapCity is almost ready for Early Access!
I'm aiming to launch within the next two weeks, with Tuesday, September 15 as the current target. I'll confirm the final date here once the remaining launch checks are complete. Still finalizing the NA DLC.
I'm really excited to get the game in your hands and see what you create!
I've always loved maps and city-building games, but I kept wanting to build beyond a single city. MapCity grew out of that idea: a map editor where you can draw cities, connect regions, and work at the scale of entire countries and continents.
You can build your own maps or edit real-world regions, drawing roads, placing buildings, and developing neighborhoods. My focus has been on making those places readable and convincing at regional and continental scales.
What to expect in Early Access
MapCity is still in development. There are rough edges, and performance varies with the size of your project and the tools you're using. Current limitations include:
Experimental 3D terrain views can have visibility and loading issues.
Large terrain brushes and edits across large areas can cause noticeable delays.
Areas placed over rough terrain can have visibility issues.
Navigating and editing detailed real-world maps can be slow in some situations.
Some development layouts need manual adjustment, especially around complex boundaries.
Farm tools are still a work in progress.
If you run into a bug, please report it in the MapCity Discord. Include what you were doing, your hardware, and a screenshot if possible. I'll be fixing bugs and improving the editing experience throughout Early Access.
Optional North America map data
The base game is a small download, and you can build your own maps from scratch without downloading any real-world map data.
The free, optional North America map-data DLC is planned for launch and contains road and building data for the US, Mexico, and Canada. It's a large download: approximately 115 GB to download and 185 GB installed. That's why the map data is optional. I'll also be working on better ways to deliver real-world map data in the future.
What's next
I'll share the confirmed launch date here and post a feature roadmap shortly after release, with more detail about the project's next steps.
Thank you for following MapCity and supporting its development. If you'd like a reminder when it launches, add it to your wishlist. I'm looking forward to seeing what you build!
Sorry to keep you waiting, but I'm confident MapCity will be worth the wait!
Thanks!
Ryan
