Imagine placing a kingdom’s future in the hands of one extraordinary person.
Spelltech’s magic users advance through seven levels. At the summit stand archmages, possessing almost limitless mana and unique abilities capable of devastating armies. They alone hold the title “Wizard” they become engraved in the nation's history for their great deeds.Finding the next archmage shapes education, warfare and social ambition. Three legends show how differently that power can shape a nation.
The Age of Wisdom (~1,000 years ago): The Great Sage
Magic once passed privately from master to apprentice. Many gifted people never discovered they could use it.The Great Sage an archmage that could actually see mana and reshape its flow. As a child, he assumed everyone could, until friends thought him strange. He mastered multiple magical disciplines, becoming the first polymath. Watching his students’ mana flow falter, he developed incantations that consistently guided emotion, visualization and casting.A child during the Great War, he later protected his people and devastated an enemy army by redirecting mana. Yet he remained a pacifist, hoping to end all wars by investing in magic. He founded the academy and introduced testing for every child at ten, regardless of birth. His ambition was a kingdom strengthened through knowledge. The Dark Age (~600 years ago): The Tempting PrinceThat opportunity also elevated a starving orphan who learned to use charm and suduction to manipulate people to survive. He graduated quickly, faster then anyone intended. Handsome, extravagantly dressed and utterly selfish, he could bend minds and turn enemy armies against themselves. A spectacular victory brought national adoration.Even the king obeyed him. He wanted pleasure, and the kingdom paid for it through exploitation, persecution and slavery.Almost a decade of excess ended with a foolish accident after a drunken stooper. His grotesque tavern caricatures bear little resemblance to his beauty, but preserve the warning: “The Tempting Prince will get you.”The Golden Age (~400 years ago): The Wizard KingThe Wizard King combined mastery of time with unending ambition and a taste for power. He renamed his flourishing kingdom Aurelis, celebrating the prosperity the Sage envisioned.Believing mages represented humanity’s next evolution, he established magical nobility and elite marriage laws to produce stronger descendants. Royal heirs had to demonstrate aptitude. The academy grew tenfold.Neighboring nations became dependent on his kingdom’s magical supremacy.Four centuries later, Aurelis still lives within his hierarchy. Nobles inherit the strongest gifts. His statues still dominate the central streets of the kingdom to this day.Today: Master Mage EldricEldric this era's archmage is able to charges objects with immense mana energy, unleashing mana storms at will, or giving mana crystals to other mages. His greatest concern is finding the next archmage, as the end of another millenia is upon us, the demon king will apear in this decade!Following the Great Sage’s prophecy the Demon King will returns every millennium to devour humanity. Demonic attacks suggest humanity’s preparation time is nearly over. The Demon King's immense power will take at least three archmages to repel, probably losing two of them in the process. Yet even two ordinarily coexist only during a successor’s five years of training. With the next invasion expected within a decade, Eldric summons an otherworldly hero, gifted upon arrival with extraordinary mana and abilities.
Would you choose discovery under the Great Sage (endless work), dangerous luxury at the Temptation Prince’s court (ultimate bliss that ends in a swift death), or inherited power during the Golden Age (restricted golden cage)?
