Backrooms Fishing v0.45 - The Demo Comes to macOS & Linux

The demo has been Windows-only since launch. Starting today it ships three native builds:

  • Windows, unchanged.

  • macOS, one universal app that runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

  • Linux, a native build. No Proton needed.

The Mac and Linux versions bundle everything they need, so there are no extra system packages to install. Steam downloads the right one automatically. This update also brings the demo up to v0.45.14. The last patch notes covered v0.42, so there is a lot to catch up on. Here is everything that landed since.

New: Tidal Swells

Glowing caustic ripples now appear on the water every couple of minutes and linger for about fifteen seconds. Click one during high tide and the high tide runs longer. Click one during low tide and the low tide ends early, with the leftover value rolling into the next high tide. Even the common one grants a serious stretch of extra high-tide time. On a brand-new save the first swell shows up within the first minute, so you meet the mechanic right away.Swells come in three rarities, telegraphed by color and size:

  • Swell - blue, the common one.

  • Surge - purple, three times the boost.

  • Golden Swell - gold, ten times the boost. For an attentive player it shows up roughly once an hour, and it is worth the wait.

With enough tide-duration upgrades, attentive clicking can keep a single high tide rolling indefinitely. That is intentional. Have fun with it.

Quest Rebalance

We went through the progression data quest by quest and cut the targets that were stalling players rather than challenging them:

  • Faster opening: quest 1 needs 35 Almond Water (was 75) and quest 2 needs 25 catches (was 50).

  • The first bobber upgrade now costs 7 Almond Water and sits pinned at the top of the shop, so the first purchase is obvious.

  • Quest 7 asks for 20 upgrades instead of 25, since the last few cost more than most players had banked by that point.

  • Hold-the-high-tide quests are 20 to 50 percent shorter across the board (quests 3, 17, 23, 31, 43 and 52).

  • Quest 48 is no longer a hold quest. It now asks for 600 Tile Crawlers, which fits its journal entry better anyway.

  • Quest 35 needs 175 Rare catches instead of 250, and quest 36 needs 150 Epics instead of 200. Both were rate-gated cliffs in the data.

All of these apply retroactively. If you were stuck on one of them, it may complete itself the moment you load in.

Quality of Life

  • The quest panel now names the journal entry you are working toward, like "Unlocks Entry 3: Finding Stillness", so the next reward is always visible.

  • New Income Rate setting: show your almond water rate per second or per minute, whichever reads better to you.

Performance

  • The game now detects weaker hardware and automatically tones down the most expensive visual effects. Gameplay is identical.

  • Autosaves and background snapshots are much lighter, and two UI animations that used to repaint constantly now run on the GPU. Together they remove the main sources of periodic micro-stutter during long sessions.

Polish

  • The browser demo now has a proper phone layout. Nothing changes on Steam, this one is for the web version.

  • Assorted fixes, including a settings page overflow on small screens.

Existing saves carry over untouched, same location, same progress.A note on the new platforms: both boot, render, play, save and resume under automated tests on real hardware before every release, but they have had less human playtime than Windows. If anything misbehaves on your machine, post in the discussions with your OS and what happened. Fixes ship quickly. The demo covers the first 60 journal entries of the full game. If you're enjoying it, wishlisting Backrooms Fishing genuinely helps a small studio like ours. Thanks for playing.
