In Fleetbreakers, choosing your faction is about more than picking a different fleet.
Each faction brings its own mechanics, damage types, ships, colonies, progression, and strategies to your runs.
For Early Access, you'll be able to command two playable factions: the Cobalt Expedition and the Slaraash Swarm.
Let's meet them.
Led by Admiral Flint, the Cobalt Expedition favors technology, energy weapons, and powerful defensive shields.
You'll begin Fleetbreakers playing as Cobalt, commanding them throughout the Prelude and the first two chapters of the story.
Energy weapons build Overload on their targets. Build up enough and you'll trigger a powerful energy explosion around the affected ship—opening up opportunities to turn one target into a problem for everything around it.
Through the Energy Lab colony, you can unlock additional technologies to push your energy-focused builds even further.
Cobalt squadrons and stations are naturally more fragile, but they can compensate with Shield Generators.
Shields replenish between individual battles during a mission, allowing your fleet to recover some of the damage it has taken.
Build additional Shield Generators and your entire force becomes better protected—but be careful. The enemy can destroy your generators and weaken your fleet's defenses.
Among Cobalt's unique ships are the Leviathan, a heavy specialist equipped with point-defense cannons and a devastating Death Ray ability, and the Burster, an agile assault ship that's essentially a shotgun in space.
If you like building up your defenses, experimenting with energy synergies, and watching Overload tear through enemy formations, Cobalt might be your fleet.
Complete Chapter 2 and you'll unlock Fleetbreakers' second playable faction: the Slaraash Swarm.
Represented on the Council by Nestkeeper Sha'Chirrick, the Slaraash bring an entirely different approach to your runs.
Instead of Energy, the Slaraash specialize in Acid Damage.
Acid attacks have a chance to create temporary pools that continue damaging anything caught inside them, giving the Swarm another way to control the battlefield and wear down its enemies.
The Slaraash-exclusive Acid Vat colony gives you even more ways to enhance your acid-focused builds.
Where Cobalt relies on shields, Slaraash rely on drones.
Depending on your build, drones can add extra firepower, heal damaged ships, or help reduce incoming damage.
Build the Incubator colony and combine its technologies with enhancements and Relics to make your drones an even bigger part of your strategy.
The Carrier embodies the Swarm, deploying drones as its primary source of firepower and even turning them into projectiles with its Drone Bomb attack.
Then there's the mosquito-like Stinger, equipped with a beam attack and the high-piercing Ripper Beam ability.
If overwhelming your enemies with drones, spreading acid across the battlefield, and embracing the Swarm sounds like your kind of strategy, the Slaraash are waiting.
The differences don't stop there.
Cobalt and Slaraash approach squadron capacity differently, have their own Starmap colonies and technologies, feature unique visual identities and achievements, and open up different possibilities for your builds.
Once you've completed Chapter 2 and unlocked the Slaraash, you'll be able to freely choose between Cobalt and Slaraash for both Story and Free Play runs.
The goal isn't for one faction to be the "better" choice.
It's about discovering which one fits the way you want to break fleets.
