Ball, Fall, Dungeon Crawl · published · build 24795726

After eight months of prototyping, drafting, designing, playtesting, and revising, Ball Fall Dungeon Crawl is ready for Early Access! It's been fun designing a drop-merge roguelike, taking a genre that I've been obsessed with and putting my own twist on it. Ball Fall is a deckbuilder, but I've tried to avoid a lot of the Slay the Spire deckbuilding tropes. There's no pick-3-perks here, no incremental deck additions, and no path-through-a-map. Ball Fall has a legit dungeon to explore, chock full of traps and treasure and altars to old gods. Your deck is all driven from the gear you're wearing - no level ups and no experience. It's inspired more by Brogue than by Slay the Spire. (I don't think I've gone more than three days without playing that game this last year. Slightly obsessed. Still have zero victories.) For those of you coming from the demo, here's the changes for 0.9.0 / 0.9.1:
- New music! Both the demo and the release versions have the whole soundtrack by Rob Kovacs. Awesome chiptune energy.
- Levels 5 and 6 of the dungeon added in. Brave the fearsome swamp.
- The swamp levels have a new water hazard. Level 1 and 2 balls will float up to the top, and others will sink. Ice balls of all sizes float.
- Added the status effects Aquatic (bonus Strength depending on water level) and Floods (causes the water level to rise at the start of a battle).
- I've removed the physics gremlins from the game - or at least the text about them. Actual gremlins may still exist in the physics system. When a drop takes too long, it just moves on to the next phase now.
- The Chains weapon effect now deals (# merges / 2) bonus damage instead of (# merges) bonus damage. The merge count also resets if you use a special ability instead of just with each new drop.
- The Frostbite status effect now deals (ball size + 1) / 2 damage instead of (ball size + 1) damage
- The Cleave weapon effect now deals one quarter damage to neighbors instead of one half
- Fixed a bug where you couldn't hold more than 10 items in your inventory. You can only see 10 at a time, but the others are still there
- Fixed a bug where selling an item ignored the item count
- Fixed a bug where dead hedgehogs were still spiky
- Added saving and loading of games
- Added an alchemist and pyromancer starter kit to the Mage class
- Fixed a bug with displaying larger (boss) sprites on the battle screen
- Fixed a bug where traps triggered by monsters didn't update their sprites
- Fixed a bug in 0.9.0 where the standard starting kit for the Mage (the Wizard) had the wrong equipment
- Added a new victory screen and game over screen. More news and updates coming up! Happy crawling!
