Captain’s Devlog #2 - New Planet Gameplay Reveal – Kourou

Hi Captains, it’s Kip again - General Manager of Magic Fuel Games.

From the Q Continuum to Vulcan, Star Trek is home to wondrous locales. We want to make sure that our Captains feel the thrill of exploring unknown and strange worlds. It’s my pleasure to reveal one of those worlds for you today: Korou.

Korou is a chaotic planet of ice and fire. Abandoned by the X’Lehari after escalating complications with the Tetryon Rift, Korou is home to abandoned structures and shady figures looking to operate where they likely won’t be found…

No planet is only one environment, and Korou is no exception: Vast frozen glaciers slowly move across its surface, concealing integral resources beneath. Volcanic badlands shoot fire and magma through deep surface trenches, scaring the frozen landscape. Steam fields combine the two extremes as superheated water erupts and provides a home for the only source of organic material on the planet.

Our goal in varying the landscape of our planets isn’t only for aesthetics. Each zone will provide unique opportunities, resources, and risks, as you explore and work towards solving the mystery of the Tetryon threat. If you played the demo, you’re probably aware of the temperate oasis of Daegus - - but this lush planet also supports a rocky desert of sun-baked stone, and the dramatic topology of nature’s crystal monuments.

Species

We want your crews to be made out of an authentic slice of the various groups that form the Federation in the mid-23rd century. Bolians and Trills will work alongside Humans and Vulcans, and join a cast of other familiar faces who’ve signed up with Starfleet to make the world a better place.

Decorations

While these outposts are in pursuit of scientific discovery, permanent monitoring stations should not just be places crew can work, but thrive. You’ll have options on how to beautify your bases so that your crew can feel good calling these far flung outposts their temporary home.

Interplanetary Logistics

In Star Trek, the ship is a swiss army knife of capabilities, however the mid-23rd century challenge of Star Trek: Outposts Unknown stretches the logistics of the available technology. Food synthesizers still require organic input, fusion-generators require deuterium, some advanced processes require water. Your crew aboard the U.S.S. Resonant lives in a society striving to eliminate resource scarcity, and one that hasn’t completed this goal quite yet.

The iconic exploration technology at your disposal is still impressive. Your ship’s goal will be to support your operations on-planet until an outpost is self-sufficient. There are many mysteries to discover in the X’Lehari System, and semi-permanent research stations will enable you to diagnose and solve the Tetryon Rift threat while your ship is needed elsewhere, and resource transfer between planets will allow you to fill local shortfalls in needed supply.

While you are far from Federation space, you haven’t been forgotten. Periodic resupplies sent through passing ships will give you a steady intake of new crew and key resources. Carefully examine the competencies of each new addition, and always keep in mind the resources needed to support additional personnel!

In Closing

At the risk of sounding like we’re stuck in a timeloop - thanks again for all your feedback on our demo! Some of what we’ve talked about in this diary is a direct result of your feedback, and we can’t wait to see how you all fare as Captains once this releases.

Until then, don’t forget to wishlist our game on Steam and join our Discord!

Thanks for joining us on this journey,

- Playstack & Magic Fuel Games
