Ygdran Hollow: A Monument to Failure

When people think about fantasy worlds, they often imagine ancient ruins swallowed by forests.

Ygdran Hollow is the opposite. Once, this region was covered by oceans, thriving ecosystems, and some of the most advanced research facilities on Corel. Today, it is a vast desert dominated by an impossible structure: a colossal tree-like organism so large that it can be seen from miles away, its roots twisting through shattered foundations and long-abandoned laboratories. Its name is Ygdran, and it wasn't supposed to happen.

Corel's Greatest Creation?

Long before the events of Fading Echo, House Kelevra stood at the forefront of scientific and Ætheric research on Corel.Among their many projects was an ambitious experiment designed to address one of the world's greatest threats: corruption. The goal was simple in theory and nearly impossible in practice. Create a living organism capable of absorbing and processing corrupted Æther before it could spread further across the world. For a brief moment, it looked like they had succeeded… Then Ygdran kept growing, and growing, and growing… What was meant to be a solution became something else entirely.

The Sea Beneath the Sand

One of the most striking aspects of Ygdran Hollow is the contrast between what it is and what it used to be.Throughout the area, players will discover evidence that this desert was once covered by water. Giant shells lie stranded in the sand, research facilities stand half-buried beneath roots and rock, forgotten pathways hint at a thriving region that disappeared long before One's journey began. Ygdran didn't simply grow larger than expected, it consumed everything around it. Designed to absorb corrupted Æther, the organism instead drained vast amounts of healthy Æther from its surroundings, disrupting the delicate balance that sustained the region's ecosystems. Over time, the oceans receded, the land dried out, and entire settlements were swallowed beneath roots powerful enough to tear apart stone and steel alike. The desert itself is the scar left behind.

One of the First Areas We Designed

Ygdran Hollow holds a special place in the development of Fading Echo. It was one of the very first regions we started designing when the project was still taking shape. The image of a colossal tree rising from a dead sea immediately captured our imagination and helped define many of the themes that would later become central to the game. Ironically, it was also one of the last areas we fully completed. Over the years, the Hollow evolved alongside the rest of the project, growing from a striking visual concept into a location deeply connected to Corel's history, the legacy of House Kelevra, and the mysteries surrounding the corruption. In many ways, the area grew just as relentlessly as Ygdran itself.Thankfully, with considerably less collateral damage.

More Than a Landscape

What makes Ygdran Hollow memorable isn't just its scale, it's the story hidden beneath the roots.

Every ruined structure, every dried seabed, and every abandoned experiment tells the same tale: a world desperately trying to save itself and paying a terrible price for failure. As One explores the Hollow, she'll uncover pieces of that story and begin to understand a truth that echoes throughout Corel: sometimes the things we create to save the world are the very things that change it forever.
