Development Log #21 - Hunting, Trapping, and Keeping

Hello Survivors.

The Isle's animals won't come to you. They spook, they bolt, and if you get close enough some even bite back. This week we're covering three ways around that: hunting them yourself, letting the trap do your work, and keeping them close enough that they pay you back.

Hunting

Like your pre-historic ancestors, your first hunt will be with a sharp stick and a lot of patience. Stay crouched or the animal hears you and bolts. Get too close and it either bolts or turns on you. Be ready to pounce first.

Ranged weapons come later. They let you hunt from a safer distance, so long as you don't miss.

Trapping

Foliage, mud, and hours of patience not your vibe? Fair. The Isle has other options. As you research more crafts for survival, you gain access to three traps: the land snare, the fish trap, and the snap trap.

The land snare handles small game: squirrels, rats, rabbits. You'll need to re-bait it after each catch.

Then there's the fish trap. Drop it in open water, whether at the fishing shack, the open ocean, or any decent pool, and it pulls in fish while you do something else. Placement is the difference between a master fisherman and someone who catches minnows all day.

The snap trap is the rarest one currently in the game, and it does two jobs. For the hunter, it stops larger animals in their tracks and sets up an easy kill. For the base builder, it protects your loot from a different kind of prey. Your fellow man.

Keeping

For those who grow too attached to their furry friends, we offer three enclosures that let you care for the animals you catch, and in return, they take care of you.

First up, the animal enclosure. Pair it with a land snare and this small cage becomes home for your fur babies. Feed them, look after them, and they produce fur that refines into cloth.

Beehives are a safe space for bees and a reliable way to collect honey. What do the bees ask for in return? Nothing. Pretty good deal.

Last is the birdhouse. Same idea as the beehive, only for birds. They leave behind feathers, and if you're lucky, eggs.

This week we're rolling out the Community Board: a single stop for NPC quests, player bounties, and mob bounties. Motes are the essence of life; the fifth element that alchemists on the mainland have chased for centuries. Every living thing carries them, and when a life ends, they linger. This week we cover changes to how you gather them, and a new way to spend them. Relic Reduction Relics used to be a dime a dozen. That has changed. We've lowered their drop rate and cut the total number o…
