Development Log #27 - More to Motes

Hello Survivors.

Motes are the essence of life; the fifth element that alchemists on the mainland have chased for centuries. Every living thing carries them, and when a life ends, they linger. This week we cover changes to how you gather them, and a new way to spend them.

Relic Reduction

Relics used to be a dime a dozen. That has changed. We've lowered their drop rate and cut the total number of relics in the game from 27 down to 12. The ones that made the cut pull their weight, either by feeding directly into the lore we are building or by being worth a second look.

With fewer relics on the ground, breaking them down at the Reliquary is no longer enough to keep a steady Mote supply. So we are adding other ways in. One of them is the newly updated quests on the town boards. More on that in another log. Another is discussed below.

Soul Harvesters

Every entity killed on the Isle leaves a corpse. You can loot it, you can harvest it, and now you can pull its Motes out.

The Soul Harvester comes in two tiers. Both work the same way. Aim at any looted or unlooted corpse, cast the tool, and it connects. The Minor Soul Harvester may need several casts to strip a corpse clean and yields fewer Motes overall. The Major Soul Harvester does more with less.

Runes of Enchantment and Disenchantment

Motes have a new use, and Runes are the tool that applies it. A Rune of Enchantment is a held item that will look like this. Use it on any of your builds and they gain an enchantment.

An enchantment sits over a build as an additional layer of defense. It absorbs the first 1,000 damage the build would take before the build itself takes any. If it does take damage it will slowly regenerate itself over time, as long as you keep Motes in your resource cabinet. Speaking of resource cabinet, you'll want to keep Motes in it anyways, cause if you don't the enchant will decay and fall off.

Runes of Disenchantment do the reverse.

This week we're rolling out the Community Board: a single stop for NPC quests, player bounties, and mob bounties. We've reworked how rewards flow through the system, and given NPCs the sense to be afraid when the Isle turns hostile. The Community Board The NPCs on the Lost Isle have always needed a bit of help here and there. Frames get new inserts. Walls get new decorations. And your build can finally be capped with iron and a proper roof. Frame of Life Your property deed tracks four scores that shape your base: Prosperity, Antiquity, Architecture, and Industry. Until now you had to walk back to the deed to check them. That changes this wee…
