Dev Log #2: The New Grid Block System

In our last post, we introduced The Districts Glow-Up Update and gave you a little sneak peek at our new grid block system. Today, we want to show you how it works and how it will change the way you build cities in Palettopia.

From chaotic distributions to strong stable structures.

One of the core challenges in developing Palettopia has been balancing two conflicting ideas:

  1. The Dream: A gridless city builder where you can paint organic, flowing shapes.

  2. The Reality: Real (and imaginary) cities need structure and organization to feel believable and immersive.

With our new grid block system, you get the best of both worlds.

Building Block By Block

When you paint a district in Palettopia, you are still free to create any shape you imagine—circles, long winding strips, triangles, zigzags or quatrefoils. But now, as soon as your paint hits the canvas, our new system steps in to generate Grid Blocks.

Behind the scenes, the game calculates the space you painted and fills it with blocks of all different sizes to create a beautiful, non-repeating layout. These blocks dynamically shrink and expand to perfectly fit your painted boundaries, making sure every corner of your city is used. So go ahead and draw those wild shapes! We’ll fill them in with perfectly placed buildings that fit your custom design.

Ready for Our Close Up

These new blocks bring a whole new sense of scale to Palettopia. Looking at your colorful city from high above is great, but the real magic happens when you zoom in. You can now peek down narrow alleyways, weave between rows of towering buildings, and watch how your smaller neighborhoods connect to grander avenues. Zooming in truly transforms your painted canvas into a vibrant, dimensional space to explore.

Building for the Future

While we love how this looks, the Grid Block system is actually doing more than just making things pretty. It’s laying the foundation for our upcoming Puzzle Gameplay System! Having this structured layout means we can start adding fun, logic-based challenges tied to your specific blocks, neighborhoods, and district boundaries. We have so many ideas for this and can’t wait to show you what’s coming next.

What's coming up?

Now that the foundation is poured, it’s time to talk about the buildings themselves. Join us for our next post where we discuss the new district assets and why we chose the "Utopian Victorian" aesthetic for our first major district theme.

Are you planning to build tight, efficient city blocks or sprawling, organic neighborhoods? Let us know in the comments!
