We want Erosion to be a very special addition to the roguelike catalogue. To achieve that, we’re building the game on a unique premise - where deaths shift time to impact an open overworld. Today, I’m highlighting 2 weapons and some of the work we’ve been doing on the open overworld.
What kind of cowboy game would this be if you couldn’t crack a Whip?! The Whip is the starting secondary weapon. As a reminder, Secondary Weapons are melee weapons with unlimited ammo. Fighting with them increases the chance of ammo drops for your Primary Weapon so swapping between the two is a test of resource management.
The Whip has an AOE effect, damaging all enemies in its path. But as you can see in this little clip, it has an unusual crescent path, encouraging you to kite mobs in a favourable direction.
We’ve also been working on the Uzi, a new Primary Weapon. While it is similar to the standard Machine Gun, its fire rate and damage is considerably higher. This is compensated by its wide spray, shorter firing distance and smaller rounds which only hold 33 bullets before needing to reload. In comparison, the Machine Gun’s rounds have 80 bullets. This makes the Uzi better for narrow paths that can get crowded by bad guys.
And speaking of narrow paths, we’ve also been adding a bunch of new tiles in the procedural dungeon mapping. We’ll continue working on these across all dungeon biomes so that each run feels fresh with weapons, loadouts and map variety.
I wanted to show a few more ways we’re populating the open overworld experience. Unlike most dungeon-crawlers where there isn’t much beyond the core dungeon gameplay, we’re also building a voxel open hub world. It is filled with quests, environments, and characters that will suffer consequences when time skips forward.
As a bit of tutorialization, we’ve added a quest which will grant access to your first hovercar. You’ll need to find scrap parts in this new junkyard area so that your friend can build you a new ride.
Finally, I wanted to share a simple quest type that will give you more things to do in the overworld. As is video game custom, you can find a message board in the local village. Bounties for Wanted troublemakers are posted there.
I went out to the badlands with our new hovercar to find The Bear, but this thing is a lot stronger than I was prepared for! RUN!!!
We appreciate you checking out our game! It’s much bigger than anything we’ve made before so we will be holding playtests to get player feedback. If you’d like to play Erosion way before we launch, you can sign-up for the playtest here on Steam!
