The District Glow-Up Update

Hello, Palettopians!

Since our last update, the team at Oh Wow Games has been heads down working on some very exciting updates! We are thrilled to finally open the paint can (if you will) on our most significant milestone yet: The Districts Glow-Up Update.

This development update represents a massive leap forward for Palettopia. We had two goals for this update: to drastically improve the visual "soul" of your cities and to lay the technical foundation for updating districts and the gameplay puzzle system which is coming soon.

From 28 to 81: The 352% Asset Explosion

The most immediate change you’ll notice is the visual variety. We’ve increased our base district assets from 28 to 81 unique structures. That's a 352% increase in total art assets! Every district now has new themed art assets, ensuring that each feels distinct and designed for it’s intended purpose.

We’ve leaned into a late Victorian and Edwardian aesthetic, blended with the grand optimism of Art Deco. We chose this era because it was a time of utopian visions and massive technological leaps. It gives your cities a look that is both familiar and fantastical, featuring new animated details like chimney smoke and procedural variations that ensure no two neighborhoods look the same.

After:

The "Structured" Grid Revolution

We’ve always prided ourselves on Palettopia being an organic, gridless city builder. However, to make a city feel truly lived-in, it needs structure.

Our new Grid Block System automatically generates logical city blocks within the organic shapes you paint. You get the best of both worlds: the freedom to paint flowing, natural borders, and the satisfaction of seeing structured alleys, rows of buildings, and distinct neighborhoods emerge within them as you work.

Let There Be Light: The Power of Utility

Cities in Palettopia are no longer just static paintings. Now they are living systems that develop in real time as you create harmony amongst the districts. The first instance of this is with the Utility District where lights now activate to illuminate your whole city.

The highlight of this new system is the Chaining Mechanic. When you place a Utility district and connect it to your city, you’ll witness a glorious glow spread across the map. Watch as lights flicker on block-by-block and district-by-district, mimicking the activation of a real-world power grid. This isn't just a visual treat; it introduces a new layer of connectivity that we’ll be leveraging in future gameplay updates.

Fields of Green: The Agricultural District

To sustain a thriving utopia, you need a way to feed your people. We’ve introduced a dedicated Agricultural District to provide a source of life for your city.

Painting this district fills your canvas with swaying grains, springing sprouts, and lush plant life that reacts to the wind. This organic landscape provides a stunning visual contrast to the verticality of your towering city blocks.

Wait, what happened to the Parks district? Don’t worry, your Palettopians still have places to play! The previous "Park" slot has been evolved to create a more robust Entertainment District, featuring grand monuments and fountains to celebrate the culture of your city. This swap allows us to distinguish between the functional greenery of a farm and the ornamental beauty of a city square.

What’s Next?

This update is the foundation we’ve been working toward. With these systems in place, our next focus is building out the Puzzle Gameplay Systems that will give you even more ways to interact with your creations.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we do deep dives into the new grid tech, the inspiration behind our art, and a "Meet the Dev" session with Cobalt!

The world is your canvas. What will you paint?
