We have some good news. Zugnaex is back! But don't panic. It's better than ever thanks to some really good advice from you all. Over the last few months, we completely revamped the game. The store page was redone. The service was improved so now players will have a better gameplay experience. Also, we're sharing the backstory and more.
In the story, Zugnaex is a powerful demon. Players complete different challenges online to ultimately face and defeat the demon. When you install the game, "zugnaex.exe" is the program you run to play single player or battle online. It is a modification of a modification of a modification of (and so on and so forth) the 1993 DOOM® source code. Over the last 30+ years many talented developers have modified that code, created powerful tools, and updated it to keep up with modern game engines. The unique feature of Zugnaex is a bit confusing. What this mod does is it adds multiserver support. That means a player can travel from one server to another.
In traditional client/server multiplayer games you play on one server. When the match ends, the server changes maps. In multiserver games, when you exit a map you "zone" (in this context, this means travel to another server). An important aspect is the servers are managed by an external program that maintains player state (stats like health, armor, ammo, etc.). When you travel to another server, you keep your stats. This creates a seamless experience. It feels like a single WAD (game data file) but it's many of them.
Great question! The online service hosts many battle variations. We are constantly working on new ones and making improvements to the ones that are available now. Here are some that you can experience: A Demon a Day - work together with your friends to defeat demons. Each kill counts for all active players but be careful as friendly fire is enabled. Help each other to get the highest score and become a demon slaying legend. That Guy - complete different mission objectives with your friends but there's a twist. The demons are powerful and the marines may succumb to their will. Who is your ally and who is your enemy? Play to find out. Pennies from hell - this is a parody. Demons drop pennies and you collect them. It's a PvP party where the best players will wallow in the riches offered by the denizen of hell. Ready or Knot - it's time to play hide & seek but old school FPS style. It's PvP where all players are against "it." If "it" survives the other players explode just like in the movie. And many more including speed running, co-op adventures and the ultimate confrontation with Zugnaex itself.
