The regions of MISFORTUNATE just became a whole lot more important.
Update 0.4.2 introduces the complete Region Special Ability system, giving teams powerful new strategic advantages for achieving full Gold-level control of a region.
Owning individual Units is no longer the endgame. Controlling an entire region can now fundamentally change how that part of the board behaves - unlocking unique abilities, exclusive crafting opportunities, immunities, discounts, tolls and new ways to interfere with your opponents.
Region control is dynamic. If your team loses one of the required Units or it falls below Gold level, the corresponding Special Ability is lost until control is restored.
★ REGION SPECIAL ABILITIES
WOODS
Take full Gold control of the Woods and turn every return to START into an opportunity.
- When an eligible Woods player reaches START, that player receives a 2-Turn Die.
- This includes reaching START through normal movement, START PORT and Feast.
- Woods controllers unlock the ability to craft a START PORT for 1 Honey.
CHINA
China transforms Shops into one of the strongest economic advantages on the board.
- China controllers receive half-price Item purchases across Shops.
- The discount also applies to the Trophy.
- Honey exchange offers retain their normal values.
- Gold Ground gains access to the nearby Field Shop through Regional Interaction.
- China controllers can craft a Rigged-3 Die for 1 Honey.
- The Rigged-3 replaces the next Travel Dice roll with one die guaranteed to roll 3.
PERSIA
Persia gives its controllers greater freedom while making the region far harder for opponents to escape.
- Eligible teammates who REST within Persia receive a 1–2 Die.
- Opponents beginning their turn inside Persia are restricted by the existing 1–2 Die travel mechanic.
- Normal forward movement beginning from Rock is exempt.
- Reverse movement into Persia remains affected.
BABYLON
Controlling Babylon turns the Pitfall from a threat into an asset.
- Babylon controllers become immune to the Pitfall.
- The immunity also applies to Event-driven and forced movement into the Pitfall.
- If Babylon control activates while a teammate is trapped, that teammate is released.
- When an opponent pays the existing 160 Token Pitfall rescue, those Tokens are paid to the Babylon controlling team instead.
- Babylon controllers can craft a Gold Die for 2 Honey instead of the normal 3 Honey.
JUNGLE
The Jungle becomes hostile territory for anyone who doesn't control it.
- Opponents standing within the Jungle are prevented from using Items.
- Bomb remains the Jungle-specific exception.
- Item reactions such as Shields are also suppressed while the restriction applies.
- Jungle controllers unlock a Shield craft for 1 Honey during their pre-roll turn window.
EGYPT
Control Egypt and the Ghost begins working for your team instead of against it.
- Egypt controllers can use REGIONAL INTERACTION with the Ghost while standing on Fire.
- The Egypt controlling team pays no Labour cost when using the Ghost.
- Normal Item or Unit value costs associated with Ghost interactions still apply.
- When an opponent uses the Ghost, the Labour portion of their payment is paid to the Egypt controlling team.
- With two active teammates, the Labour payment is split evenly between them.
- Opponents cannot use the Ghost against members of the Egypt controlling team.
EDIN
Edin specialises in eliminating the fees that slowly drain everyone else.
- Edin controllers are exempt from Waiting Fees.
- They are exempt from Element Tax.
- An Edin player's own share of a Transfer Fee is waived during trades.
- The waived portion is not transferred onto the other trade participant.
- Edin controllers can craft Mercy for just 1 Honey during their pre-roll turn window instead of the normal 3 Honey.
GREECE
Greece protects its controllers from the consequences of travelling the wrong way.
A new stackable No-Honey status now applies when players pass START or CHECKPOINT in reverse.
- While No-Honey is active, applicable Honey rewards from passing or landing are suppressed.
- Each normal forward pass removes one stack.
- Greece controllers are immune to No-Honey.
Reverse movement now carries a much more meaningful economic consequence - unless Greece belongs to you.
TOWN / SUNDALAND
Control Town and the Portal network begins working for you.
- Town controllers can use Portals for free.
- This also removes applicable Portal surcharges while Resting & Waiting.
- When opponents successfully pay to use Portals, those Tokens are distributed to the Town controlling team.
- The Context Panel now displays the correct Town-adjusted Portal cost.
- Free Portal sources are no longer unnecessarily consumed when the Town ability already makes the journey free.
- Town controllers unlock Portal Maker crafting for 2 Honey from anywhere before rolling.
LIBYA
Libya gives its controllers command over the Mountain.
- When an opponent lands on Mountain, they must pay 1 Honey when they have Honey available.
- If they have no Honey, the fallback becomes 30 Tokens per active Libya controlling teammate.
- Players who cannot immediately cover the Token payment can raise the required funds using the normal selling and trading systems before paying.
- Mountain charges occur only once per genuine landing and cannot be duplicated simply by repeating an interaction on the same space.
- Libya controllers unlock Mountain Port crafting for 2 Honey from anywhere before rolling.
★ SPECIAL ABILITY CRAFTING
The Crafting Window now supports recipes and discounts that are unlocked specifically through Regional control.
Depending on the region your team controls, you may gain access to:
- START PORT - Woods
- Rigged-3 Die - China
- Discounted Gold Die - Babylon
- Shield - Jungle
- Discounted Mercy - Edin
- Portal Maker - Town
- Mountain Port - Libya
These abilities create an entirely new reason to pursue complete regional ownership rather than simply collecting isolated high-value Units.
★ BOW & ARROW IMPROVEMENTS
Bow & Arrow has received a major pass to make its forced Item mechanic behave consistently across the game.
- Bow & Arrow can now be used throughout valid stationary action windows on its owner's turn.
- Bow targets opponents only.
- Supported standalone inventory Items can be forcibly activated even when their normal activation requirements would prevent their use.
- Bow's forced Item behaviour correctly interacts with the Jungle Special Ability.
- Forced movement now properly resolves mandatory destination consequences such as Tolls, Traps, Pitfall and Events.
- Optional interactions at a forced destination are suppressed where appropriate.
- Forced movement now correctly supports movement generated by START PORT, Mountain Port, Portal Maker, Team Port and Swap Port.
- Nested Event chains no longer interfere with the Bow user's own position, roll state or turn progression.
- Titanium now correctly respects Bow & Arrow's forced-use rules.
★ PORTAL MAKER POLISH
- Portal Maker now uses its dedicated crafted card artwork throughout the Crafting Window and Item Inventory.
- Crafted Portal Makers retain their correct presentation after being acquired.
- Town's Portal Maker recipe and existing Portal Maker activation behaviour have been brought into alignment.
★ FIXES & STABILITY
- Improved Endowment upgrade-state handling and cleaned up upgrade-level state restoration.
- Improved authoritative handling of remote and forced Item interactions.
- Improved Ghost authority and payment handling for the new Egypt Special Ability.
- Improved restoration of Egypt's Fire-to-Ghost Regional Interaction after reconnecting.
- Prevented opponents from bypassing Egypt's Ghost protection through stale or invalid target selections.
- Prevented repeated interactions from incorrectly charging Libya's Mountain payment more than once.
- Improved synchronization of Region-based payments and rewards in multiplayer.
- Improved preservation of turn and movement state during complex forced Item and Event chains.
- Updated affected player-facing wording and Item descriptions.
★ THE COMPLETE REGIONAL GAME
All ten regions now have their own Special Ability:
Woods • China • Persia • Babylon • Jungle • Egypt • Edin • Greece • Town • Libya
Regional ownership is now about much more than collecting tolls.
A fully developed region can alter movement, protect your team, restrict your opponents, reduce costs, generate income, manipulate existing board mechanics and unlock Items that nobody else can craft.
Getting four Units to Gold is difficult.
Keeping them there may be even harder.
