1 mil is approximately the projected length of 1 unit at a distance of 1000 units on the reticle. For example, a target that is 1 yard wide at 1000 yards occupies 1 mil on the reticle.
Distance = 1000 × Target Width or Height ÷ Mils.
According to the range-finding formula, if the target width is known to be 1 yard and it occupies 2 mils in the scope, the shooting distance is:
1000 × 1 ÷ 2 = 500 yards.
