Latin Core is out: FlashBoss meets its first dead language

FlashBoss · published

Latin, the first dead language

Latin Core is live: the first thousand words of Latin, in the FlashBoss way — 20-word clusters, spaced repetition, a boss at the end of every cluster. We rehearsed the method on two constructed languages, Esperanto and Toki Pona, and learned how far it stretches. Latin is the first language with no living speakers to check us, and the answer is the same.

Built to read

Latin Core has one purpose: reading real Latin. It is the first 1,000 lemmas of a 2,000-word course — the vocabulary that carries you into actual sentences from the first tier, with grammar introduced step by step and example sentences that never use grammar you have not been taught.

In the pack

  • 1,000 high-frequency Latin lemmas across five tiers, in themed clusters
  • Long vowels marked with macrons on every headword
  • Translations and study notes on every card in English, German, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Spanish
  • 22 reference lessons — declensions, conjugations and core grammar, tier by tier — readable in the same six languages
  • Every word and every example sentence spoken by a neural voice in Classical (restored) pronunciation
  • Boss-fight graduation: no cluster is cleared until its hardest words are mastered

Latin arrives speaking your language

Study Latin through whichever of the six you call home: the translations, the study notes and the lessons are all there, on every card, from the first tier.

Coming next

Latin Pareto 1 — tiers 6 to 10, the second thousand — follows next week and completes the course.

About the screenshots

Our screenshots lag behind the game. If a pack's page lists a language in its description and its artwork, that language is in the pack, even where a screenshot has not caught up. Where a screenshot or the website disagrees with the description and the artwork, the description and the artwork are right.
