"It is important to make sure the fundamental game modes are as fun as possible so when we place them under the meta gameplay, the drive to succeed comes from both top down and bottom up." – Justin

PvE Development

Development continues to move steadily forward as we refine the core PvE experience.

One of the biggest milestones this month has been balancing the difficulty curve across our game modes. We're beginning to stabilize the experience between Easy, Medium, and Hard, while giving each PvE enemy a more distinct identity through unique behaviors and combat styles. The goal is for enemies to feel different not only visually, but mechanically, creating encounters that require players to adapt rather than rely on the same strategy every time.

Of course, as development continues and we're testing new ideas, not everything works perfectly the first time.

One area we've been refining is how enemies spawn throughout a mission. Early versions relied heavily on randomized enemy distribution, but we found that this made encounters feel too similar from wave to wave.

To solve this, we're developing a new Wave Orchestrator that allows us to handcraft encounters and create more memorable mission moments. Rather than simply increasing enemy numbers, we're experimenting with a new threat budget system that assigns different values to enemy types. This gives us much finer control over pacing, difficulty, and encounter variety while creating battles that feel more intentional.

Universe Lore

“By the late 2300s, humanity never escaped the solar system, it got trapped inside it. Earth is a single wrapped megacity. Every world beyond it is war infrastructure: foundries, refineries, and supply outposts feeding an arms economy that has no off switch. For half a century the factions have fought a grinding war over the old expansion, territory and resources that no longer mean much. The fighting never stopped. It just lost its point. Then the Gate opened..”

One of the most exciting developments this month is that the larger narrative behind Iron Rebellion is beginning to take shape.

As Faction Wars evolves, we're working to ensure every mission serves a greater purpose. Mining operations, outpost assaults, and other objectives won't simply award points - they'll contribute to a larger conflict where victories and losses influence the ongoing struggle between rival factions. We'll continue to share more as the universe continues to expand.

Performance Updates

While much of the team's attention remains on future gameplay systems, we've also spent considerable time improving the experience players have today.

Over the past several weeks, we've been investigating reports of performance stutters, conducting extensive profiling across the game, and implementing targeted optimizations to improve overall performance. These improvements will continue rolling out alongside other quality-of-life updates, including a minimap and, if testing continues to go well, a spectator camera.

We're also excited about the upcoming launch of Steam Frame and have been working behind the scenes to ensure Iron Rebellion is optimized to deliver a great experience on the new hardware. We're looking forward to sharing more as we move closer to Steam Frame verification.

To tie all of this up, we're currently interviewing for a Growth Systems Developer who will help accelerate our PSVR2 porting efforts while expanding future systems, including DLC and other long-term content planned for the game.

Community Updates

Our Discord community continues to grow every single day!

Community-organized events are continuing every week, with EmVee hosting regular Saturday night battles that bring together pilots from across the factions. We've also launched a new #mech-paint-jobs channel where pilots can share their custom camo creations as you can see in the example shown above. If you've been experimenting with the camo system, we'd love to see what you've built.

Last, but not least, we’ve released a new wave of merch through our Fourthwall store. “Certified Mech Pilot” gear, anyone?

As always, we thank you for your continued support. Every month brings us closer to the vision we've had for Iron Rebellion from the beginning, and we're excited to continue sharing that journey with you.

Community2 Sep 2026Monthly Brief: September 2026August turned out to be an unusually busy month. We're heading into September in a position we've been working toward for a long time: heads down, all hands on deck, building Faction Wars. Over the past several months, we've shared a lot about the ideas taking shape behind Faction Wars.
