WinHack 95 - Supporter Pack · published · build 24434100
This update ships a complete second game inside WinHack 95. When you start a new save slot, the game now asks which experience you want: Classic -- the full business sim you already know -- or OUTBREAK.EXE, a fast arcade action game running on the same 486. Nothing about Classic changed, and your existing saves keep working exactly as before. The mode is chosen per save slot, so your company keeps living in slot 1 while the outbreak rages in slot 2.
You are the mouse cursor. The system is lost, and every virus strain from the WinHack universe is crawling out of the walls to prove it. Your weapons fire on their own -- your job is to dodge the swarm, hoover up the XP they drop, and make the one decision that matters every level-up: which of three upgrades do you take? Clicking still does something, of course. The starter weapon is a click-driven zap, because this is 1996 and clicking things is the whole point of a mouse.
Runs are short and they escalate hard. Elites barge in with modifiers and drop chests. Bosses arrive every five minutes with telegraphed dashes and summon phases. Combo chains bank bonus data. And the deeper you get, the more the machine itself joins in: the CRT flickers, colors split, scanlines press down, the background glitches -- by the final minutes the whole screen is having a very bad day, and it is glorious.
Every run pays out KB -- kilobytes of exfiltrated data -- based on kills, elites, bosses, survival time and combo milestones, doubled when you win the map. KB buys new operators and ten permanent shop upgrades: more integrity, more damage, faster firing, armor, regen, a bigger pickup magnet, luck, richer payouts, extra draft rerolls and an auto-restore that picks you up once when things go wrong. Deaths are never wasted; the data always comes home.
OUTBREAK.EXE is in the demo too, and the mode picker recommends it as the quick start. If you tried the demo and the business sim felt like more machine than you wanted to manage, this mode is for you: no desktop, no mail, no invoices -- just you, a cursor, and an escalating amount of trouble. Your hour of demo time applies as usual, and your saves carry over to the full game.
CodeForge got a Randomize button next to the Operation Codename field -- a direct player request from someone tired of typing a name for every op. One click rolls you a period-appropriate codename (Project Neon Falcon, Crimson Walrus 95, Silent Mongoose), and you can keep rolling until one fits. This update also packs the in-fiction malware texts inside the executable so overzealous antivirus scanners stop mistaking the game for the thing it satirizes -- if your scanner quarantined the game before, verify the files through Steam after updating and it will scan clean.
This is the biggest thing added to the game since 1.0, and it started as a one-line idea: what if the infected 486 fought back? Tell me how far you get, which evolution you found first, and what the shop is missing. Let me know in the discussions! I check them daily.
Have fun. Don't catch any viruses you can't remove.
