Fight. Salvage. Ascend.

The first focused playtest for ECHO//syntax is here.

ECHO//syntax is a belt-action game about fast movement, crowd control, resource management, and learning how to turn enemy pressure back against them. For this playtest, I’ve narrowed the game down to one core experience: Scout fighting their way through a small authored Armory lift run.

This build is meant to test the fundamentals before I expand the game further.

What's in the Playtest?

You'll take control of Scout, an agile dual-blade chassis, and fight through a sequence of moving and stopped elevator encounters featuring different enemy roles and combinations.

The current build includes:

  • Scout's core combat kit

  • Tension and Energy, including Spark and Priming

  • The "Bot-Hack" combat states: Stagger, Launch, Overload, and Pummel

  • Armor and Scrap-based recovery

  • A curated Armory enemy roster with melee, support, ranged, and defensive roles

  • Authored lift encounters built around positioning and enemy combinations

  • Score and results systems

  • A new HD-2D-inspired lighting and presentation pass

  • Graphics and performance options

  • In-game access to the playtest feedback form

This is still an active development build, so bugs, rough edges, balance problems, placeholder material, and things that simply behave strangely are all possible.

That's part of why I'm running the playtest.

What I'm Looking For

I'm especially interested in feedback about:

Combat feel — Does Scout feel responsive? Are attacks, movement, Spark, Priming, and SLOP fun to use?

Readability — Can you tell what enemies are trying to do? Are attacks and dangerous situations understandable in the middle of a fight?

Encounter pacing — Do fights stay interesting? Are there sections that drag, overwhelm you, or feel empty?

Difficulty and recovery — Does taking damage matter without making a run feel hopeless?

Visual presentation — The game has recently received a substantial HD-2D lighting and effects pass. I'd like to know how it looks in motion and whether the added presentation helps or hurts combat readability.

Performance and bugs — Softlocks, broken enemies, strange animations, progression problems, graphical problems, control issues — please report them.

You don't need to be good at action games to give useful feedback. First impressions are valuable.

Why This Build Is Small

ECHO//syntax has a much larger world and set of systems planned, but I've deliberately put most of that aside for now.

The goal is to make the core fight → salvage → ascend loop work before adding more levels, playable chassis, progression systems, or procedural content.

If this slice is fun enough to replay on its own, then I have a strong foundation to build the rest of the game on.

Thanks to everyone willing to spend some time with this early version of the game. Every run, bug report, and piece of feedback helps me figure out what ECHO//syntax should become.

Fight. Salvage. Ascend.
