This update brings major new features that enrich the content and gameplay of ACR. First of all, we’re introducing three new cars spanning 38 years of rallying history: the 1980 Audi Quattro Gr.4, the car that kicked off the era of 4WD dominance, in the specifications with which it made its debut at Rally Algarve; the 1999 Peugeot 206 WRC; and the 2018 Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. It is also now possible to create private lobbies, giving you even more control over your online multiplayer sessions. We’ve also implemented support for multiple custom liveries, allowing you to save your favorites and easily select them from the in-game menu. This is a first step towards modding support, which we plan to expand in the future. Photo Mode is now available as well, and we can’t wait to see the photos you share with us.
As always, we’ve worked on numerous quality-of-life improvements and further evolved the driving model across all surfaces. As a result, we will be resetting the leaderboards. Have fun!
The Supernova Team
When Audi unveiled the Quattro at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, rallying was still firmly dominated by lightweight two-wheel-drive cars. Audi had a different idea: permanent four-wheel drive, a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, and enough traction to change the rules of the game, quite literally. Four-wheel drive had only recently been allowed in international rallying, after Audi had lobbied for the rule change. The story goes that when manufacturers were asked whether they objected to 4WD being allowed, they assumed Audi was talking about the humble 75-hp Volkswagen Iltis military vehicle. They had no idea what was coming. Before its official homologation, Hannu Mikkola took the prototype Quattro to the 1980 Rally Algarve as a course car. Its times were recorded but did not count towards the classification. Had they counted, Mikkola would have won the rally by around 26 minutes, setting the fastest time on 24 of the 30 stages, an extraordinary preview of the revolution to come. This is that very early Group 4 specification: a 2.1-litre turbocharged five-cylinder producing around 320 hp, permanent four-wheel drive and a mechanically locked centre differential. And there is one detail that perfectly captures how different these first Quattros were: pulling the handbrake locks all four wheels. With the centre differential locked, the rear wheels cannot simply spin freely while the front wheels keep driving, making the traditional rally handbrake turn virtually useless.
When Peugeot returned to the World Rally Championship in 1999, the era of Group A was coming to an end and a new generation of World Rally Cars was about to take over. Based on the compact 206, Peugeot created a car that was small, wide and deceptively aggressive, a very different interpretation of the modern WRC formula. The 206 WRC made its competitive debut at the 1999 Tour de Corse, with French asphalt specialists François Delecour and Gilles Panizzi behind the wheel. The debut was far from perfect, with both cars retiring with mechanical problems, but the speed was already there. Over the following events, the car matured rapidly, culminating in its first WRC victory in Sweden in 2000 with Marcus Grönholm. Under its compact bodywork sat a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing around 300 hp, driving all four wheels through a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system. Its short wheelbase, wide track and carefully developed suspension gave the 206 WRC exceptional agility and traction, making it particularly effective when the road turned tight and technical. This is the 1999 specification: the raw, early version of a car that would go on to dominate the beginning of the new millennium, winning three consecutive manufacturers' titles and becoming one of the defining World Rally Cars of its generation.
Developed over almost two years and more than 10,000 kilometres of testing, the Polo GTI R5 was engineered from the ground up to be a fast, reliable and easy-to-use rally car. Volkswagen tested it extensively on both asphalt and gravel, focusing not only on outright performance, but also on durability, consistency and ease of servicing, essential qualities for a car designed to be raced by customer teams. The result is a remarkably well-balanced machine. Its compact dimensions, wide track and carefully developed suspension give it a precise and responsive character, while its permanent four-wheel drive and front and rear limited-slip differentials provide huge traction across changing surfaces. It was designed to be quick without being difficult to drive, making the most of the tightly controlled R5 regulations. Under the bonnet sits a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 272 hp and 400 Nm, coupled to a five-speed sequential gearbox. Weighing just 1,230 kg, the Polo can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 3.9 seconds. Its competitive debut came at the 2018 Rally Catalunya, a particularly demanding first outing combining asphalt and gravel stages. The Polo immediately showed its potential, with Petter Solberg taking it to a WRC-2 podium on its very first rally. Small, agile, powerful and exceptionally composed, the Polo GTI R5 is a perfect example of what the R5 formula was all about: a full-blooded rally car that delivers serious performance without sacrificing usability and reliability.
Personalisation matters and so we've implemented the ability to import your own custom liveries into the game to run on your favourite cars.
The Assetto Corsa Rally Community have already demonstrated their creative talent and we want to provide your additional tools to do just that. We've introduced a tool which is intuitive and in-depth that will allow you to create extraordinary images.
Update 0.6 also introduces password protected lobbies for you to have full control over your lobbies allowing you to play only with the people you decide.
Bringing new cars into Assetto Corsa Rally of course means we're also bringing you more Rally Events.
