FileSurfer launched four days ago, quietly and on purpose. I originally planned to release FileSurfer as a standalone Windows app, but after some convincing from a good friend of mine(who is also a publisher here) I decided that bringing it to Steam was the best way to reach the community and build something together. Between shipping immediate fixes and responding to the first wave of feedback, there wasn't time for a big announcement -- and honestly, that felt like the right trade to make. Now that things have settled, I wanted to properly introduce FileSurfer and tell you where it is headed.
Where It Started
FileSurfer didn't begin as a product. It began as a handful of small, private tools I built to solve my own frustrations with Windows file management: a faster way to search, a cleaner way to preview, and a dual-pane layout that actually worked the way I wanted it to.
Over time, those tools kept earning their place in my daily workflow. Eventually, there was enough here that it stopped being a personal utility and started being something worth sharing. That's FileSurfer: not designed in the abstract, but built one real annoyance at a time.
Where It Stands Today
As of v0.6.4, FileSurfer is stable enough to be a daily driver. Dual-pane navigation, fully customizable keyboard controls, folder size calculations, a command palette that can search your entire system, native Windows context menus, and instant previews for images, video, code, PDFs, and Markdown. All of it works, today.
What Comes Next
Early Access exists because the most interesting problems only show up under real use, on real machines, with real file systems. Our next stretch isn't about adding more surface area, but tightening what is already here:
Reliability -> Closing out the edge cases that surface in unusual directory structures and complex file types.
Friction -> Streamlining permission-elevated actions to eliminate manual restarts.
Feel -> Making keyboard navigation consistent across every single part of the interface.
Tabs, plugin support, and cloud drive integration are still on the roadmap. They'll wait until the foundation underneath them is solid.

Something broke, feels slow, or just feels wrong? Submit a bug report! FileSurfer is being shaped by the people using it, and that only works if we keep communications open.
