Playto Cloud can now translate a whole screen as an image, and the review deck now meets you before the game starts.

Image method on Playto Cloud — one-shot screen translation

  • How it works — select Playto Cloud as the engine, choose the Image method, then press the Shutter (default F4). Playto sends that one screenshot to the cloud and shows the translation. Each shot costs several times more Cloud balance than a text translation, so it only runs when you press the button; auto capture stays off in this mode.
  • Why Image — it reads the whole screen, not just the text: who is on screen, the mood of the scene, what the UI is showing. That context often makes the translation more accurate than text-only translation. It also handles decorated or stylized text that OCR struggles with.
  • Sees who is speaking — because it reads the whole screen, the translation can take the speaker and the scene into account (name plates, portraits) and match the tone. It is not perfect and can still misjudge a line, so treat it as a strong first read rather than a final one.
  • Translations appear next to the original text on screen (near-text placement), so you can read them where you are looking. Subtitle-style bottom placement works too — switch it under Overlay placement.
  • Cloud image translation is not yet available in some regions. We plan to address this in a future update.

Review before you play

  • The start screen now shows the review cards that are due for the game you are about to play. Go through as many as you like, one tap each, and press Start whenever you want — your remaining cards keep until next time.

Cloud free balance topped up once for this update

  • So everyone can try Image translation, we have reset every Playto Cloud free balance once for this update. This is a one-time top-up, not a monthly refill. Enough for dictionary lookups and a good number of Image shots.

Dictionary model — set it up without leaving the screen

  • Tapping a word when the dictionary model isn't installed yet now downloads it right there, with progress, download source and time remaining shown in the same dialog — no trip to Settings.
  • If a download source is slow you can switch to another one with one click, and a download interrupted by closing Playto resumes on the next start.
  • If the dictionary model can't start on your PC, translation falls back to the default engine instead of stopping.

Clearer answers when something goes wrong

  • Self-diagnosis now runs a two-step engine start test and tells you which step failed, and shows what OCR engine is in use and what to do if the better one isn't available.
  • Cloud connection failures now show a plain message with a Retry button instead of a raw error string.
  • If the folder holding your models isn't reachable (for example a drive that isn't connected), Playto says so instead of blaming the engine.
  • Error reports now include storage, engine start history and loaded-module information, so we can help without asking you to run commands.

Fixes

  • Multi-line dialogue no longer loses its second and later lines in Image translation.
  • The speed check in self-diagnosis now measures real engine time. It previously could report cached results, which made translation look much faster than it was.
  • The Image method no longer disappears from menus when the current model cannot use it — it now shows why it is unavailable instead.
  • The Shutter button now appears in every mode while capturing, and shows a progress state after you press it.
  • First Steps now moves to the next page automatically when you finish the current one.
  • When the translation engine fails to start, Playto now suggests verifying game files in Steam first — the most effective general fix, and easy to miss.
  • Image translations placed next to the text now use a size that matches the text box instead of the smallest size.
  • In Shutter mode the overlay now clears when the scene changes, the log entry appears immediately, and pressing Shutter on the same screen brings the overlay back.
  • The overlay comes back with its content after switching to another window and back, and can be captured in screenshots.
  • Pressing Shutter during automatic capture no longer disturbs the automatic loop.
  • The setup wizard's download indicator no longer spins forever after the download has finished.
  • Log entries from Cloud Image translation are now tagged as Image instead of Refined.
  • Models now has an "Install manually" section showing where to put each model file and direct download links, for connections where the in-app download won't finish.
  • Fixed a case where switching the download source for a Gemma model finished the download and then failed the integrity check (the mirrors had been updated upstream). Sources that serve a different file are now skipped before any data is written.
  • Each Cloud Image shot now uses a quarter of the credits it did before, and the Cloud balance shows roughly how many shots remain.
  • Playto no longer lets Steam's or other overlays' Vulkan layers into the translation engine — a cause of "engine started but never responded" on some laptops.
  • The download bar no longer wraps its numbers into a narrow column.

If Playto is part of your gaming, a short review helps other language learners find it — and we read every one.

Community5 Sep 2026Where we are: fewer steps to the first translation, and a simpler UI nextA short note on where Playto stands, what we still need from you, and what comes next.
