Hi Pilots!
There is a new playtest build available now! Join the playtest from the store page! Today's build debuts a new look and a revamped playtest flow.
Adrift is a game about rebuilding. It's important that the art direction matches that theme. In pursuit of that vision I have added lights that react to your progress through the game. I am hoping this adds spectacle and signals progress more explicitly. The new boundary sprites feature shadows and light masks to add depth and make the world feel more three dimensional as they interact with the new lights.
The first level you encounter in the playtest is meant to teach you how to play. Previously at in-person playtests folks would have a blast in mechanic sandbox levels after I taught them how to play. I can't teach EVERYONE across the world how to play, so this learning level needs to be something folks can just pick up and enjoy. This has proven to be pretty tough! Today's build breaks some of the learning into smaller lessons to try to make it easier to pick up. It also tries to be more explicit with signaling objectives.
Fun fact: the light flares are processed images of the Cat's Eye Nebula.
