Project Update: The new and improved Lou's Island! 🏝️🐝

Hey Pilots! 🛩️

In our last update, we gave you a peek behind the curtain at what we’ve been working on. From smaller tweaks like shorter nights to the big overhauls we made to fishing and exploration. But the biggest changes are definitely due to that "Sandbox Prototype" we tested internally, which sparked some massive changes for Lou’s Island.

Today, we want to share more details on what those changes look like, how your home base is evolving, and introduce a few new machines (and a buzzing new feature) coming to the game because of it!

🏘️ Lou’s Island: It Takes a Village 🏘️

In our older versions and last year's demo, Lou’s Island served as the central point of the archipelago, but it didn’t quite feel like a true base of operations yet. Sure, Hefti (the absolute best mechanic around) was already there, but then again Clip and Clap were occasionally more of a hindrance than a help!

We wanted your home base to feel alive, so we’ve changed how the island grows. Now, as you explore and find them, Fidge and Bobster will actually move into their very own little houses on Lou’s Island.

  • Fidge will be your go-to for gadget upgrades.

  • Bobster finds a home (after he’s done working on the archipelago’s radio towers!)

  • Jackie also decided to move her boat just a little closer to everyone else, so you’re all together in the little bay 🫶

And of course, Granny and Clip and Clap are still on the island, and everyone worked together to move Granny from her lonely spot on the hill to your little community hub. And with that, there are just a few more targets around for Clip and Clap’s pranks 👀.

It really changes the vibe - you’re no longer alone out there, you’re building a community!

🐝 Drones: Your Little Busy Bees 🐝

We’ve worked hard to make gathering resources in Lou’s Lagoon satisfying, but it’s still nice to not have to do all the work by yourselves, right?

Enter the drones!

By setting up drone stations, you can get a little help from these bee-eautiful automated assistants. Once you’ve discovered a resource for the first time, these little guys can help gather it over time to make your next big building project a little easier.

During the "Sandbox Prototype" phase, we were just using temporary placeholder assets, but our art team went to town on the final designs. This final bee-inspired version absolutely won our hearts and we hope you like it as much as we do! And look at their cute custom animations for taking off, returning back home, and dropping off what they collected! 🐝🥰

🛠️ New Machines: Processing Resources the Way They Deserve 🛠️

As we re-balanced the game, we realized that raw driftwood, scrap metal, and raw wool aren't exactly the sturdiest materials to build a civilization with. Processed resources are playing a much bigger role now, which means you're going to need a bigger workshop.

Say hello to The Refiner, The Processor, The Manufacturer, and The Loomer!

You’ll be able to build and place all of these on your island, and each one unlocks a completely new tier of materials:

  • The Refiner: Used to treat and improve core building materials like wood, metal, and rock.

  • The Processor: This one’s here to process foods - basically a mill and a juicer combined!

  • The Manufacturer: For the fine details. Think small mechanical parts like screws or microchips.

  • The Loomer: Turns that messy raw wool into neat, usable textiles.

Building up this production line makes Lou's Island feel like a functioning, useful home base, and we can't wait to see your layouts.

We’re also working on setting up the Job Board. It’s going to give you a comfortable way to check out all available tasks right from your home on Lou’s Island. After all, repairing those radio towers has to be good for something, and what better use than keeping you updated on the islanders’ needs from afar?

As always, thank you all for the incredible support and for letting us take the time to realize Lou's Lagoon the way that feels right to us. And luckily, you won’t have to wait long until you can inspect some of these changes yourself and visit the new and improved Lou’s Island! 🏝️🤭

Let us know what you think of the new village setup and the drones in the comments, or over on our Discord server!

Best, The Lou’s Lagoon Crew ✈️🌴
