Devlog #1: Mic Test, One Two One Two

What's up, punks! 👋🏽

It's Brenden from Green Parrot Games. I'm the game designer.

You're reading this, presumably because you want to know what's up with us. With the game. With the page.

Well I'm writing this on the 29th of April, 2026 and basically, we decided to shadow drop the Steam Page 🤘. Soft and floppy launched it so we can get feedback and we can start a playtest next week, from the 4th to the 11th of May, alongside the Deckbuilder Fest. There's not even a real trailer yet, just me nattering over a bunch of footage.

But the point is that you can see what we're about. What Lucky Punk is about (which, if you don't actually know, I'm impressed that you found this and love that you're reading it, but you probably should watch the gameplay explainer or read the Steam Page first.)

And this... well, this devlog is just more of that.

WHO ARE THESE PUNKS, ANYWAY?

Green Parrot Games consists of these three foolhardy, hopeful humans, based in Cologne, Germany.

Tom Bockhorn has been programming both in and outside of the games industry for over 9 years and he's already started his own games company once before, TxK Gaming, that made the VR game Dungeon Full Dive.

Sarah Burrini has worked on animation, illustration and comics for over 15 years. She's an award winning comic artist, and a straight up pioneer in the German webcomics scene who self publishes her own comics.

Brenden Gibbons (hey, that's me!) is a game & narrative designer with over 10 years of experience. He's worked on an eclectic range of games from Oddsparks: An Automation Adventure, to Say No! More, Last Day of June, and more.

Anyway. We decided to start this company together and we've been properly working on this game for like, as of the time of writing, two months. We got some cash from our regional games fund (Shout out to the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW) and our aim is to make vibrant, loud and high personality games, and Lucky Punk is our debut game!

We're also getting supported by Fourth Moon Games who are helping us with some marketing, product, and administrative paperwork (THANK GOD). German Business Paperwork is like English Business Paperwork but has absolutely massive words like Arbeitgeberbrutto, Stellungnahmeformular and Tragfähigkeitsbescheinigungen. ☠️☠️☠️

WHY LUCKY PUNK?

It's me. It's my fault. Hello, I'm Brenden and I'm a card game sicko.

I've been playing Magic the Gathering since I was 13 and while I'm now only on digital cardboard crack, I do still keep a single card in my wallet from back then. I also absolutely love games like Dream Quest, Slice & Dice, and StarVaders. (Of course I'm playing Slay the Spire 2, but that doesn't need mentioning, does it?) I'm just a big sicko for deck builders, card games and roguelikes. I am the type of person who knows and prefers the "Berlin Interpretation" roguelikes and still occasionally do bad runs on Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. This is my burden.

And here we were, trying to figure out what the debut project should be. We're thinking something that can be done in less than a year. Let's bash out something quick, test out how we work with each other, pick something we can confidently execute on with our 35 years of collective experience. So I just reached into this abyss bountiful well of card game knowledge.

Anyway, the real point I'm trying to make is this. There's this incredible moment at high level play of card games. It's when you know just how razor thin the margin of error is between winning and losing is and even though you're bad at maths, you’ve mathed it all out in your head, but all you’re left with is luck and agonising over an incredibly simple decision as if it was your least favourite kidney stone.

I wanted to share that moment with you! 💖

We've got some board games that absolutely rule at highlighting this moment (like all-time classic Quacks of Quedlinburg) but there's not a lot of pure push-your-luck video games. Yeah, okay, there's a few, Party House in UFO50, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, etc but there's room here. Fertile ground. and I realised what I needed to make this moment more accessible for lower level players.

Perfect Information.

Who wants to do maths? It's a digital game! Let's just throw Into The Breach into this stew and give you all the tools you need to access that beautiful moment as many times as possible.

With that, it felt like a proper, whole concept. Everything clicked and my gut feeling told me that this was gonna be great. I pitched it and we went forward with this idea, I did some paper prototyping on Tabletop Simulator as we figured out all of the funding stuff and most importantly, all of the German business paperwork (Tragfähigkeitsbescheinigungen. ☠️ It's 29 characters long!!). After all of that, we finally started development proper.

And now... we're here! With a Steam Page!

And a playtest that will be available on the 4th of May!

Crazy.

Anyway, I've nattered on too long. I need to get back to making the game.

Thanks for reading. We have a Discord where you can natter back to us and you can watch us squawk about on TikTok, YouTube, BlueSky and Insta. If you want to try guessing what the magic card in my wallet is, I started playing during Time Spiral.

And since it's this Friday, Happy International Worker's Day, solidarity to all workers out there. 🌹

Peace out, ✌🏽

Brenden
