Today we’re going to share our inspirations for creating Untamed Tactics.
I hope you’ll be able to find the similarities and differences.
Western TRPGs
● Wildermyth
Wildermyth is such a fun little game that showed T-RPGS don’t need to be hardcore. The whole system of progressing as children and grandchildren of the original adventurers is a good twist and was an inspiration to see how T-RPGs can be made more accessible. Those accessible, simplified systems were a strong inspiration for our permanent upgrading and non-inventory-based equipment system.
● XCOM
Making a T-RPG without having this one on the list would be blasphemy. Such a tough game to play, but man, what is it rewarding if the 95% chance to hit works in your favor, and you shoot the last alien and are able to save one of your troopers.
Milan (Game Designer of Untamed Tactics): Truth be told, this is the game where I learned that save scumming is a thing. I could not bear losing some of my best soldiers, even if it is part of the game. That is also why we wanted to create challenging fights but have the game be more forgiving to the player.
● Banner Saga
Milan: While the game did not click mechanically for me, the production value has blown me away. The artwork is obviously gorgeous, as is the atmosphere created by simple effects and the powerful score.
JRPGs
● Final Fantasy Tactics (FFT) & Tactics Ogre (TO)
The core principles of FFT and TO have been essential to forming the initial look and feel of Untamed Tactics. The blocky, board game-like aesthetic is heavily based on FFT: Advance and Advanced 2’s visual style. While we moved away from it mechanically, with our focus on the battle of a small team versus larger numbers and each character being a strong individual personality, the visual heritage is very visible.
● Fire Emblem
The grid structure of Fire Emblem was taken directly to be used in the game, with unit selection, the character details UI, and other small elements incorporated in our game directly.
Other Games
● Hades
We are all big fans of SuperGiant Games. The games are fun and visually stunning, but what we like best is the delivery of the story and how the narrative is designed in the game. For us, one of the big inspirations is to create our own line of narrative-driven games.
Other Media
● Redwall (book)
While creating some of our characters, we were inspired by Redwall.
● Dungeons & Dragons
DnD, especially Forgotten Realms, was an inspiration for the setting and the combat system.
