Panther VR - Dev Blog 7# [New Backpack System]

Hi everyone,

It is time for another dev update! Last post we showed you the new interaction system and the direction that we are taking for Panther VR. We are very great full for all the positive reactions, and we can't wait for the release of the 0.1.1 update. Until that moment, we keep you updated on the progress and what is to come. This week we will share some insight into a very big addition to the game: a new inventory system!*

*

In the current version of Panther VR you are able to find weapons and loot across the level. You could pick them up, but if you wanted to bring a wrench with you, you needed to hold it in your hands the whole time. Loot also just disappeared into an unknown dimension when you picked it up. These things are all about to change with the first update.

Introducing: the Backpack! The Backpack serves as a physical inventory system in which you can store items, melee weapons, and Loot. The Backpack is located behind your head and can be grabbed by holding down the grip button.

GRAB BACKPACK

Inside your Backpack you can find a certain amount of slots for Items and melee weapons, sorted into different tabs. You can now bring your favorite screwdriver anywhere you want, stock up on some toilet paper, or create your own collection of mugs. You can bring all small items with you including Melee weapons and loot. So next time you come across a guard, there might be something very useful in your backpack.

GRAB ITEMS

Once an item is placed in your backpack, you can hover over it to show its name and type. If you see an item you need, just grab it out of your backpack, and it is ready to use!

We also included a Quick store and Auto store function to the backpack. When you grab the backpack, you can also put items in the auto slot at the top which are automatically stored in the first empty slot. For even more convenience you can also use the Quick store function. Without holding the backpack, you can just grab and put and item behind your head to automatically store it in your backpack!

All the items you can store in your backpack fall under these categories (for the time being):

Items: Stuff you can find around the level, from toilet paper to mug and office supplies. You can throw these to distract the guards, and with update 0.1.2 hopefully, you will be able to stun them, or maybe disarm them.
Melee Weapons: Some items serve as a melee weapon, like a screwdriver or a wrench. These melee weapons will instantly Kill or knock out a guard.
Loot: You can find valuable stuff like smartphones or wallets around the level. You can take them to your hideout to sell them for a special currency.

Keep in mind that more content and features will be added later to the game and are still conceptual, like the stun with items or maybe durability for melee weapons. The bag pack system on its basis will bring plenty of new possibilities to think of.

At this moment storing items will not have a disadvantage on your movement speed or noise. However, there will be a limited amount of storage for items and loot. In the current version, you can take as many loots as you could find, but with the backpack, you will think of what you will take back to your hideout. Your backpack will be emptied out once you return for a mission.

So there will be large storage for loot at your hideout, but this might be added in a later update. Meaning that in 0.1.1 loot in your backpack will sell automatically once the mission ends.
We can't wait to add more function to items and stuff in later updates. Like using a screwdriver to unscrew an air vent, or to pick locks, etc. That is why we would love to hear ideas from the community!

We hope that these new additions show that we really want to improve the game. The backpack is a big new feature and together with the new interaction system and some stuff we are still going to show you, the game already feels like a different experience. Hopefully, it will bring Panther VR one big step closer to the stealth experience you all dream off.

This concludes our Dev blog about the new inventory system. We hope you like the progress so far, and we can't wait to show you more!

- Jesse

Community28 Apr 2023The end of WolfdogHello Everybody. I hope you are all doing well. It has been a while since I last posted an update on Panther VR. A lot of stuff happened the last few months, including some that are not so fun. I’ve missed the community surrounding Panther VR, and it's good to finally have the time to write another update.
