New
A tutorial, reachable from the main menu as its own entry. Three chapters: moving and surviving, the car and the workshop, and zombies. Every step is spoken.
Your grandad is waiting a thousand kilometres from the base. He needs an engine, and he needs you to bring it. He rings you now and then while you drive — fully voiced.
Three difficulty levels — easy, medium and hard — covering loot, zombies, wear and money. Plus a sandbox screen with around a hundred dials you can set yourself and save as your own presets.
A second zombie, in four combinations of clothing. Both figures mix in the same crowd.
Maintenance tab in the OBD tester, showing the condition of every engine part as a percentage. First job on it: burning off the diesel particulate filter — the tester puts the car in neutral, sets the handbrake and holds 3000 rpm for a minute and a half. Touch the accelerator and it stops.
Exhaust smoke. Dark and sooty during a filter burn-off, thinning out as the filter clears.
Push a car by hand. Press the interact key at a car while you are not standing in a seat marker and you lean into it. Pushing from behind gets it rolling; pushing from the side barely moves it, exactly as the tyres would have it. Costs breath, makes no noise.
Player names above your friends' heads in co-op, with an arrow at the screen edge when they are out of view, in their lobby colour.
Tow truck and cab are always available, however empty your wallet is. Both put it on your tab, and both answer in their own voice — the tow driver gets less patient the more often you call him.
Three new radio songs, one removed. The radio now also plays in the start menu, with its own volume slider and a bar showing the current track.
Cars you find in the world can carry tuning parts. Parked cars wear a matching set; wrecks are allowed to be mismatched.
Controller support, early version. An Xbox layout is wired up for driving, fighting and the menus, and on-screen hints show button symbols instead of letters once you pick up a pad. This is a work in progress and has not had a full pass yet — the store page still says no controller support, and it will stay that way until this is finished. Tell us what feels wrong.
Improved
The car's name only appears for a few seconds when someone gets in, instead of hanging over every car permanently.
Submenus in the right-click menu now open and close on a click instead of when the mouse passes over them, and Escape steps back one level instead of closing everything.
The ground behind the base has the proper terrain texture and the mountain backdrop wraps all the way around, instead of ending in a bare coloured plate.
Tyre smoke has a real texture, and a burnout actually clouds up.
Mechanic skill now cuts 7.5% off working time per level, so level ten reaches the cap instead of falling short of it.
The sun moves in steps instead of every single frame. Shadows are redrawn a couple of times a second rather than sixty, which gives back graphics performance you could not see being spent.
Fuel pumps have a yellow floor marker instead of an invisible outline.
Placeholder cars no longer show up in the world.
Fixed
Items can be used without being in a car — eating, drinking, bandaging and healing all worked only from the driver's seat.
The skill book stays where you put it and can be read again; it also survives loading a save.
Figures built from many small parts are lit correctly again.
The cab no longer spawns outside the built world.
Loading a save no longer asks you to register vehicles you already own.
Co-op: a car being pushed now moves the same way on both machines.
