FlatVR 1.69 is now the main branch - 1.70 on Develop

FlatVR · published · build 25318678

The 1.69 build is now the main branch for everyone. Nothing to do; Steam updates it. It is the one that ends "FlatVR just closes": two threads rescanned the list of depth models at the same time without a lock, one freeing a string the other was still writing to, which corrupts memory silently and kills the process later, anywhere, with nothing to report. Thanks to hoonmatrix for running it under Application Verifier and turning it into a crash we could finally read. It also fixes a crash inside Direct3D when a session was stopped and started on the same game with frame generation on, and reports from a C++ exception now carry the exception and a dump of every thread.

Develop moves on to 1.70, and this one has a lot in it. We would like all of it tested:

  • A video player, on a tab of its own. Files instead of a game: a playlist you add files or whole folders to, play, pause, stop, previous and next, a progress line you can drag, and the file's own sound on your default device. The layout list says how the file packs its eyes - plain 2D, side by side or over/under, half or full - and "2D -> AI 3D" hands a flat film to the depth network. For HEVC, AV1 and VP9 there is a button that fetches FFmpeg, about 80 MB, into FlatVR's own folder; it is not in the installer because FFmpeg is somebody else's program under its own licence.

  • Blank Desktop Screen, for glasses. It covers every monitor except the one the side-by-side window is on, so the game stops shining through the glasses from the desk behind them. Nothing about your displays changes: no window moves, the taskbar stays where it is. F12 or the grey cross brings the screen back. Available when the picture comes from a game window rather than a whole monitor.

  • Unreal Engine (UEVR) is on the menu, marked experimental, instead of sitting behind Debug Mode. UEVR renders the game from two cameras straight into FlatVR, so the depth is the game's own rather than an estimate. Experimental is the promise it makes: the GPU hang is held off rather than cured, and the left eye still flickers in the mode some games need.

  • Screen Smoothing now works with 3D Depth Mode off. In 2D the picture leaves for the runtime at the capture's own size and the compositor is what shrinks it into the eye, so the switch had nothing to act on. The filtering now happens before the picture leaves, and by exactly as much as the screen is actually minified: a small or distant screen stops shimmering, one that fills your view is left untouched.

  • The crashes that close FlatVR without a word now get a report. Some crashes end a program on the spot and nothing of ours runs afterwards, which is why some of you have only ever seen the window disappear. A small helper process watches for exactly that and offers the report instead: how the process ended, and the log up to the last line FlatVR managed to write. It sends nothing without you pressing Send, and there is a switch for it on the Status tab.

  • A crash a second after the screen changes is fixed - exclusive fullscreen, a resolution change, a UAC prompt, the lock screen, or on Virtual Desktop a change of adapters (report #75, thanks). The picture being held was released while the frame using it was still in flight, and the fault landed inside the graphics driver.

  • Cinema Mode shows fewer frames against the wrong depth map, on a capture whose frames do not arrive evenly. On a 34 fps capture with a 95 ms model this went from one frame in ten to one in six hundred.

What we need most from this branch: if FlatVR has ever closed on you with nothing to send, run 1.70 and let the report window appear - that is the whole point of it. Watching a film, or using XREAL/Viture glasses at a desk, are the other two we would like confirmed on real machines. A crash report or a message here is all it takes. How to switch: right-click FlatVR in your Steam library → Properties → Betas → develop. To go back, pick last-stable. Your settings are kept either way.
