Chess: Three Kingdoms 0.5 Update Notes

Greetings, Commanders!

Version 0.5 of Chess: Three Kingdoms is now available.

This update introduces the new Famous General System, an Alpha version of the Level Editor, new clear records and Ironman marks for each Commander, adjustments to the Wuchao stages, and a large number of bug fixes.

New: Famous General System

A new Famous General System has been added to the game.

After defeating each boss and returning to camp, Lord Cao Cao will speak with you and offer a reward choice:

  • Dispatch one of two Famous Generals

  • Or receive a large amount of War Merit

The currently available Famous Generals in the demo are:

  • Cao Ren

  • Cao Chun

  • Xiahou Dun

Each Famous General has a unique Skill, starting Trait, and advanced Traits, bringing new tactical possibilities to your army.

New Famous General: Cao Ren

Cao Ren excels at forming defensive lines, protecting allies, and advancing as a formation.

Skill: Bulwark

Cao Ren moves to a selected position and makes the entire defensive line invincible for 1 turn.

Starting Trait: Fortified Formation

At the start of each turn, Cao Ren automatically forms a defensive line with allied units to his left and right.

When Cao Ren moves, all units in the defensive line move with him.

Advanced Trait 1: Heavy Intimidation

When Cao Ren or an allied unit kills an enemy, all enemies within a 1-tile square around Cao Ren become unable to move.

Advanced Trait 2: Grand Legion

Fortified Formation is upgraded.

All connected pieces can now join the defensive line.

New Famous General: Cao Chun

Cao Chun focuses on cavalry synergy, charges, and summoning horse units.

Skill: Cavalry Charge

Cao Chun charges toward an enemy in a cross direction.

If the target is a Horse, recruit a cavalry unit and add it to your reserves.

Starting Trait: Thousands Horses

Whenever any Horse is summoned, Cao Chun and all allied Horses move upward by 1 tile.

Advanced Trait 1: Tiger Leopard Line

When Cao Chun kills an enemy through movement, summon a Phantom Horse on an empty tile within a 1-tile cross range. The Phantom Horse lasts for 2 turns.

Advanced Trait 2: Iron Cavalry

At the end of each turn, all allied Horses within a 1-tile cross range of Cao Chun become invincible for 1 turn.

New Famous General: Xiahou Dun

Xiahou Dun is a fierce frontline general built around Deathmatch, retaliation, and close-range pressure.

Skill: Fierce Army

Xiahou Dun and all allied units within a 2-tile circle gain Deathmatch for 2 turns.

This Skill does not end the turn.

Starting Trait: Devour the Eye

Whenever Xiahou Dun successfully parries an arrow, he immediately raids to the archer’s position.

Advanced Trait 1: Last Stand

When Xiahou Dun dies, allied units within a 1-tile circle gain Deathmatch for 2 turns.

Advanced Trait 2: Cavalry Garrison

Once per turn.

After an allied Horse captures an enemy piece, if there is an empty tile within a 1-tile cross range, summon 1 Deathmatch Infantry Phantom.

New: Alpha Level Editor

An Alpha version of the Stage Editor has been added.

You can now create a custom stage, play it, and share it with other players.

Since the current test version cannot support Steam Workshop integration yet, the best way to share custom stages for now is to join our official QQ group and exchange them with other players.

The Stage Editor currently supports:

  • Placing any piece on the player side or enemy side

  • Placing traditional Chinese Chess pieces without skills

  • Using a traditional Chinese Chess board

  • Placing terrain such as mountains

  • Controlling enemy attack waves

  • Creating and playing custom stages

We will continue improving the Stage Editor with more options and a better sharing experience in future updates.

New: Commander Clear Marks and Records

Each Commander now has their own clear mark and Ironman mark.

When you clear the game with a specific Commander, that Commander’s clear mark will light up.

If you clear the game without using Rise Again, that Commander will also receive an Ironman mark.

The game will now also record:

  • Fastest clear turn count

  • Highest number of kills

These records give each Commander clearer challenge goals and make repeated runs more rewarding.

Stage and Difficulty Adjustments

To make the stage structure and difficulty clearer, the Wuchao stages have been renamed and adjusted.

  • The original Wuchao is now Wuchao Easy

  • Its difficulty is now Level 2: Easily Broken

  • The original Wuchao EX is now Wuchao

  • Its difficulty is now Level 4: Slightly Challenging

The difficulty of the new Wuchao stages has also been slightly increased to make the challenge more consistent.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a large number of known issues to improve overall stability and gameplay experience.

  • And of course, as with any indie game update, it is entirely possible that while fixing bugs, we may have accidentally planted a few new ones. If you run into anything strange, please let us know!

Thank you for playing, testing, and supporting Chess: Three Kingdoms.

We will continue improving the stage content, build variety, Famous General System, and Stage Editor. We hope version 0.5 gives you even more strange but surprisingly effective strategies to discover.
