Cappy & Tappy: Temples of Peril Playtest · published
Happy July everyone! We're happy to announce that a big, big update has been pushed to Cappy & Tappy: Demo of Peril. Since our last update over a year ago, we've been putting our noses to the grindstones, updating our story, gameplay, graphics and sounds on top of continuing to build out the rest of the game. We've added quite a bit, so let's get into it!
What kind of a platformer would we be if we didn't have a big bad boss for you to fight at the end of each world? Still a pretty good one we bet, but why not add one anyways? Or rather, why not add a bunch? In the full game we've got bosses lined up to cap off each temple, so you can test your mastery of the different mechanics learned in each world.
You can try out the first boss right now in the demo, and there's an additional level added to teach the new mechanics needed to defeat the boss, so be sure to play through again so you don't miss anything!
Endless Mode has been completely overhauled to finally be true to its name. Previously, Endless was just an "impossibly" tall vertical level, and we just hoped no one ever made it to the top. Well, a couple of people did. In response, we made it taller. But something felt a little silly about there being an end to Endless Mode, so we cooked up something extra special for you all.
Endless Mode is now procedurally and infinitely generated from a set of hand-made sections, meaning you can officially climb and dodge and stack until you just can't no more. In the full game, we'll pull obstacles and chunks from every world that you've unlocked, but in the demo you can still take a crack at all the goodies from the first two worlds! To make sure new players have the right stuff, you'll need to complete the new tutorial and first 5 levels to unlock Endless Mode.
As part of this overhaul, we've reset the Steam Leaderboards for Endless Mode since the gameplay is so different. We saved the old leaderboard scores for sentimental reasons, but if you want to continue to be the cream of the crop, it's time to hit it again and show your friends what you've got!
The University of New Hamster is excited to announce a brand new Archaeology course where you can test the waters and get a hang of the more technical aspects of field work in a distraction-free environment! Headed by the world-renowned Dr. Quacky, this new tutorial level shows you the ropes in a much clearer and direct manner, and queues up the story to get you ready for adventure!
Wouldn't it be fantastic if you could track your progress across your globetrotting adventure? We thought so too! Unfortunately the technology just didn't exist. So we spared no expense and developed -- from scratch -- the most cutting-edge record keeping technology ever put into a video game: A book!
But not just any book. A book with a tiny plane! And a world map you can fly around! That's right, we here at First Pancake Studios are proud to announce the inclusion of a state-of-the-art level select screen inspired by the travel montages of classic adventuring movies.
The Expedition Log™ acts as the hub for your adventures, recording where you've been, how you did, and where you need to go next. Just be careful not to spill any of the Endless Coffee™ on the Expedition Log™, no cross-testing has been done. Well, what are you waiting for? Go on and fill it up!
There's so many things we've updated in the demo, and we'd love to give them all a dedicated section but there's only so many hours in the day, so here's the field notes instead:
You can now use collected Idols to purchase hats for Cappy!
Full input reassignment support for mouse, keyboard and controller!
Better co-op onboarding, e.g. controller joining, etc.
3 separate save profiles you can switch between
New music and revamps of old tracks!
New expressions for all characters
Did we mention there's a tiny airplane?
A ton of shader and visual improvements
Tons of bug fixes and other quality of life improvements
New modifiers and improved messaging around their intended use and effects on gameplay
A couple secrets ;D
As always, we are so grateful for all of you who have been following and playing our game. We're working diligently on getting everything implemented, tested and polished for our release this year. This will likely be the last major update to the demo before release, as everything in world one is more or less in a near-final state. That said, we may release a few minor updates here and there for bug fixes and small content additions, e.g. additional Endless Mode sections, hats, etc.
If you've made it this far into the update, thank you for taking the time to read everything! Now go download the demo update and have a blast!
