For Our King · published
Hey everyone! 👋
I've been working on one of the BIGGEST visual updates For Our King has received so far!
Over the past few days, I've been improving character animations, creating new troop appearances, adding enemy variations, updating boss visuals, and making the battlefield feel much more alive!
My goal is to make the game feel more expressive, varied, and satisfying to watch, especially when there are dozens of troops and enemies fighting at once.
Here's everything I've been working on!
==================================================================================
All four allied troop classes have received a huge visual update!
⚔️ Warrior: More varied attacks, movement, idle animations, and subclass appearances.
🏹 Archer: Improved attack variations, including more distinctive volley animations.
🛡️ Lancer: Additional movement and combat animations, with subclass-specific looks.
✨ Monk: More expressive animations, blessings, and defensive magic effects.
I've added more animation variations for idling, walking, running, sprinting, attacking, and dying!
Previously, some troops had very limited animations, especially when dying. Now, each allied class has an improved death animation instead of simply holding one frame.
The animations still follow the game's original pixel-art style, with the aim of making the troops feel more alive without losing their familiar appearance!
This is one of my favorite additions!
Your troops can now look different depending on their condition and experience!
❤️ 75% Health: Early signs of injury.
💔 50% Health: More noticeable damage and wear.
🩸 25% Health: Heavily injured appearances.
⭐ Level 5: Veteran troops receive their own experienced appearance!
⚔️ Subclasses: Different troop specializations have their own visual details.
I wanted your units to feel like actual soldiers fighting their way through a battle rather than having exactly the same appearance from beginning to end.
Now, you can actually see their condition reflected in their artwork!
These are visual changes only, so troop health, damage, movement speed, and combat balance remain the same.
This is another massive part of the update!
I've created 69 additional appearances across 23 enemy types!
Each supported enemy now has four possible looks:
🎨 Original Appearance
🎨 Variation 1
🎨 Variation 2
🎨 Variation 3
Enemies rotate through these appearances as they spawn, meaning groups of the same creature won't always look identical anymore!
Some examples include:
🕷️ Blackfen Reach
Redback, pale, and hairy spiders.
Brown, ghostly, and vampire-style bats.
New Imp colors and Skull variations.
Alternate Lizard appearances and Thief hoods.
❄️ The Frozen Pass
Torch Goblins with witchfire and frostfire!
New Gnoll, Troll, and Minotaur appearances.
Alternate Gnome colors and Hex Shaman outfits.
⚔️ The King's Road
Additional appearances for Pigs, Bears, Turtles, Snakes, Pig Riders, and Slingshot Gnomes.
There are also variations for other creatures, including Pandas, Spear Goblins, Bomb Fish, and Sharks!
I wanted battles to feel less repetitive, especially when large groups of the same enemy spawn together.
I've also been giving the Warlords a much more recognizable appearance!
👑 Troll Warlord
A new war crown with a ruby!
A distinctive purple sash.
A more expressive snarl animation.
New dust and weapon accents during attacks.
His crown gets knocked off when he dies!
👑 Minotaur Warlord
A unique crown fitted between his horns.
The crown follows his head as he turns.
👑 Panda Warlord
A custom crown that sits on top of his straw hat.
Adjusted to fit his unique silhouette.
The idea is to make the bosses immediately recognizable instead of looking exactly like larger versions of ordinary enemies.
The Warlords still fight the same way, but now they have more personality!
The Monk has also received some visual improvements!
One example is Warding Light, which now has its own magical protective effect instead of relying on the old generic hit spark.
It features a protective ring, a glowing crest, and magical motes appearing around the protected troop!
I've also been improving subclass-specific details so the Monk's different roles feel more distinct.
One important thing I want to mention is that these changes focus on the game's art and animations, not its combat difficulty.
⚔️ Attack timings remain unchanged.
❤️ Health and damage values remain unchanged.
🏃 Movement speed and attack reach remain unchanged.
🎮 Enemy behavior and encounters remain unchanged.
I've also been making improvements behind the scenes to how the game loads and manages these new appearances, along with fixes for animation and shadow playback.
My goal is to make the game look and feel much better without changing the strategies and mechanics you're already familiar with!
==================================================================================
I'm continuing to polish the animations, improve the game's presentation, and test the new appearances in larger battles! With so many new character looks and animations, I've also been working on making sure everything stays consistent with the original pixel-art style. There's still more I want to improve, especially when it comes to bosses and making the different troops feel unique.
As a solo developer, this has been a huge amount of work, and I'm really excited to show you guys how much For Our King has changed! ❤️
Thank you to everyone who's played, shared feedback, or supported the development of the game so far!
