Version 0.9.6.1 Hotfix Patch Notes

The Hilltop Funeral · published · build 26373693

Dear pallbearers,

We're sorry for the frustration many of you have run into recently. Bugs, too little tutorial guidance and unclear directions have made the game harder than it was ever meant to be, and some of you lost progress or had runs end through no fault of your own. That isn't the experience we want to give you.

This has been especially true of Level 1. As the introductory level, it should be where you learn the game and get comfortable carrying the coffin together. Instead, it has been far too difficult and frustrating. We've heard that some players end up spending an hour in it, and that is definitely not the experience we intended to offer. The level asked too much of you before properly teaching you how to play, and its final section relied on a puzzle that many players found confusing. That's on us.

With this update, Level 1 now teaches the controls clearly from the start, and its final section is no longer a locked door puzzle. We've also fixed the issues behind getting stuck in the level, hard locks, and the corpse disappearing after a reset.

We are reading your feedback and working hard to make this the best experience we possibly can. If there's anything you didn't like, please fill out the feedback form using the survey button in the game. It tells us in detail what isn't working for you, and it directly helps us decide what to work on next.

Fixed

  • Fixed the corpse disappearing after a reset.
  • Fixed the game breaking when a coin was collected while retrieving the corpse.
  • Fixed players being unable to jump or lift the coffin because a tutorial hadn't appeared yet.
  • Fixed tutorial dialogue carrying on through a death and interfering with the respawn.
  • Fixed players falling into a trap during a tutorial dialogue and being left alive and stuck inside.
  • Fixed tutorial hints staying on screen while retrieving the corpse.
  • Fixed a character continuing to walk on their own after picking the coffin back up in single player.
  • Fixed online players losing their own tutorial progress after joining someone else's game.
  • Fixed the second controller sometimes failing to pair in the local co-op lobby.
  • Fixed the local co-op lobby getting stuck after leaving it quickly, which could prevent any controller from pairing.
  • Fixed a disconnected controller leaving its player stuck as paired in the local co-op lobby.
  • Fixed the display issue of the disconnection panel in local co-op mode.

Polished

  • Polished the tutorial at the start of Level 1. Each player now learns to move, jump and lift in a clear order on open ground.
  • Polished tutorial steps so that they finish once you've actually performed the action, instead of when you reach a certain spot.
  • Polished the cellar traps, which now spring more violently and are a lot less welcoming inside.

Removed

  • Removed the door unlocking puzzle at the end of Level 1. This is now a regular section, and the door is no longer locked.

Updated

  • Updated the fire effects on the candles.

To everyone who has stayed with us through these rough edges, thank you. If the game let you down before, we would be grateful if you gave it another try when you have the time. A big part of early access is hearing your voices and letting them shape the game, and that won't always be a smooth process. Please bear with us as we keep pushing updates and do our best to deliver the best experience we can for the 1.0 release next year.
