0.29 Hotfix: Steam Deck crash on launch fixed

安平 An-pêng · published

Hi everyone, I'm the developer of An-pêng.

After the 0.28 update, a player let me know that on Steam Deck, pressing Play just went to a black screen and back to the library. She recorded a video and even sent the log, which let me find the cause quickly. Thank you! Today's 0.29 is a hotfix.

🔧 Fixes

  • The game crashed right after launch on Steam Deck. The Windows build used D3D12 for graphics, which Steam Deck has to translate once more through Proton, and the graphics driver crashed partway through. The game now renders with Vulkan, so nothing needs translating on Steam Deck. On the few Windows PCs without Vulkan support, the game switches back to D3D12 by itself.
  • On Steam Deck, the resolution is now always the screen's 1280×800, and Settings → Display no longer shows a resolution option. If a different resolution was saved on Steam Deck before, it's set back on launch.
  • When a notice popped up over the Settings window (for example when a key change was refused in Settings → Controls), the Settings window behind it disappeared completely.

🆕 Easier bug reports

  • Settings has a new System tab listing the game version, operating system, processor, graphics card, rendering API, screen, controllers and more.
  • The data folder, log file and reports folder paths in Settings → System open with a click.
  • At the bottom of Settings → System, the new Create Report button packs this information and the game's log files into one zip file, with your computer's account name hidden from every path. Just attach that file when you report a problem.
  • The version number in the bottom right of the main menu now shows the rendering API the game is using (Vulkan or D3D12).

🎮 Steam Deck players

  • I don't own a Steam Deck, so I haven't been able to confirm this fix on real hardware. If the game still won't start after the update, open An-pêng's ⚙ Properties on your Steam Deck, put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in Launch Options, start the game once more, and attach the steam-5163620.log file from your home folder in the discussion forum. I'll look at it as soon as I can.

If you have any thoughts or run into any problems, I'd love to hear from you in the discussion forum.

If you like An-pêng, please add it to your wishlist. It really helps an indie game. Thank you! 🙏
