Demo update v0.5.1: a new level, better debuggability

Hello Triangle: Build a GPU · published

The demo is updated to v0.5.1. Your save from earlier versions will carry over.

Most of this update came from watching people play and reading your feedback. A few players got stuck in places I didn't expect, so a lot of the changes are about making things clearer. Thank you to everyone who sent feedback!

A new level: 1-9 Two Points

The old Two Points level asked you to do two things at once: find the line through two points, and work out which side of that line each pixel is on. That was a lot for one level, so I split it in two. The new 1-9 Two Points is just the line, and the old level is now 1-10 Two Sides.
If you already beat the old Two Points, you keep that pass on Two Sides, and the new 1-9 will be waiting for you after Slant.

Two Sides shows everything in one picture

Two Sides used to check each output in a separate test, so the same line could look dark in one picture and lit in the next. One player thought those were two different answers, which is fair. Now there's one test per line, and all three outputs are painted into the same picture in different colours.

Counter shows its inputs

Counter is where cycles start to really matter, and it was hard to see why the number changed when it did. The result card now shows start, load and enable under the graph, so you can look straight down from any cycle and see what caused the next number.

Finding bugs inside your own parts

This one came from watching a player get stuck for about twenty minutes. Their Span had passed Row, but only because every Row test happened to start at x = 3. When they used it later in Scan, it broke, and nothing on screen pointed back at the Span.
Now, if a test fails because of one of your saved parts, the result card tells you which part it is and where it went wrong, and gives you a button to go back and fix it in its level.
I also changed a few tests, like Row and Three Edges, so they're harder to pass by accident. If one of your old parts only passed because of that, it will show FAULT now and you'll need to fix it.

All bit pins are round now

Control pins like load and enable used to have an arrow shape. One player thought the arrow meant they could only connect to other arrows, and couldn't work out how to wire load into an OR. Now the shape only tells you the type: square for numbers, round for bits.

More help while you learn

When you unlock a new part, its card now shows it wired up with every combination of 0s and 1s, so you can see what it does before you use it. There are also a few small hand-written notes that show up the first time an idea is useful, and new pages in the Reference that explain what a run, a test and a cycle are.

Smaller changes and fixes

- Ctrl+X now cuts, and Ctrl+V pastes where your mouse is.
- Clicking places one part. Hold Shift to keep placing more.
- You can stop a long run at any time.
- A circuit with unconnected pins will still run now. Those pins just read 0.
- The music is a bit quieter, and the lamp on the title screen doesn't flicker as hard.
- I fixed a couple of freezes, one at certain window sizes and one when choosing Instant during a long run.As always, if something is confusing or broken, please let me know in the Discussions!
