OpenFront v0.35 is live!

Player levels and Prestige, two new ranked queues, a replay viewer you can scrub through, smarter nations, faster chat, bigger lobbies and ten new maps. Here's what's new.

Player levels & Prestige

Every game now earns XP, shown source by source on the end-of-game screen. You get a provisional figure the moment you're out, and it shows on your level straight away while the game finishes. Hit level 100 to Prestige: up to P10, then Legend.

  • Every rank has its own badge, an OpenFront unit icon on a tier-coloured plate, from Iron to Champion
  • Badges show in the lobby, the in-game player panel, the ranked leaderboard and clan lists
  • The reward track pays Caps every level and Plutonium every 25
  • Your profile has a card, a Progression tab and share links, and Account has a Progression tab too
  • Subscribers level faster: Vanguard +25%, Warlord and Steam Plus +50%, Sovereign +100%
  • You can hide your level, and keep your profile out of search engines, in Account Settings

Ranked FFA & Clan Wars

  • Free For All: 4–10 players matched by ELO on continent maps, with a 20-minute timer. The last one standing wins
  • Clan Wars: your clan against up to three others, 2–5 a side, and your clan's rating rises or falls
  • Ranked needs a trusted account. Steam accounts are trusted from the start, so you can queue straight away
  • Clans get an ELO column on the leaderboard and a clan wars contribution for each member
  • The clan browser has a fair random order, new sorts (Oldest, Richest, Lowest win score) and an open or invite-only filter

Replay viewer

Smarter nations

Nations play more like the humans who win: they save later and keep building, fortify their borders before attacking, land beachhead boats and push inland, defend against landings, aim nukes at land instead of water, nuke back, and in Free For All gang up on a runaway leader. Easy nations keep their old behaviour.

Faster chat & emoji

  • R opens quick chat on the player under your cursor. Phrases are one click, with a Recent section and search
  • F opens the new grouped emoji menu, with a Favorites row on Q W E A S D
  • The player panel has buttons for chat, emoji, alliance (K/L), target (N) and boat attack (B)
  • Heads up: select-all-warships has moved from F to X

Gameplay

  • Nukes annex again: nuking off part of someone's territory hands the cut-off piece to the enemy around it. It had quietly stopped working for most coastal empires
  • Meta: players with only a few ports or factories get faster trade ships and trains. A 1-port player sends a ship about every 8 seconds instead of 12
  • "Stop Trading with All" is now Stop Trading with Enemies, and leaves your allies trading

Bigger lobbies

No more 125-player cap. Lobby size now comes from the map: The Box fits 210, Alps 185 and Middle East 170. Hosts can also set a player limit on unlisted private lobbies.

New maps

  • Madagascar: a dedicated Nuke Wars map
  • Horn of Africa, Vancouver Island, Cape of Good Hope and Canary Islands
  • Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Rio de Janeiro, Pulicat Lake and Benelux
  • Brain Rot is here to stay, and Ommatrypta joins for Halloween

For Steam players

  • If you subscribe while you still have free days, those days are now added to the end of your subscription
  • The menu music no longer plays over the gameplay track when a game starts quickly

Quality of life

  • A HUD opacity slider in Settings → Graphics
  • See what a player is wearing in their info panel
  • The in-game menu lists the game's modifiers and disabled units
  • The Halloween theme runs from 25 October to 1 November, and you can turn it off in Settings
