IronFlux 0.1.5: New Maps, Summit Walls and Smarter Bots

major update

IronFlux · published

Commanders, 0.1.5 is the biggest update to IronFlux so far. It brings everything from our recent playtest builds: a new map system, smarter bots, new upgrades and a cleaner set of menus. Here is what's new, and what we're building next.

A new map system

  • Map browser with ALL / BUILT-IN / WORKSHOP / CUSTOM filters and a larger pop-out preview.
  • VIEW MAP: look over the whole battlefield before the match starts. Zoom, scroll, and see every start position, metal deposit, power vent and flux source.
  • Map generator with distinct terrain styles: crater fields, highland plateaus, canyon walls, rivers, island cores, Ocean Between and Archipelago. Every generated map is mirrored per player, so it stays fair.
  • Summit walls: towering peaks that nothing crosses, aircraft included. Bombers and gunships have to fly around them, and shots and sight stop at the rock. Every base has one at its back.
  • Deep open water: only the shoreline can be waded, so land armies can't walk across the sea.
  • Fair resources: metal, power vents and flux are always placed just outside each base, never inside it.
  • Save to Workshop: publish a map you generated or built straight to the Steam Workshop.

Smarter bots

  • Bots raise Shield Domes over their factories and upgrade them.
  • Bots that reach your base now siege your buildings instead of parking beside them.
  • Bots hunt down a beaten enemy's last units, so matches reach a result.

Matches play out

Sudden death and the match time limit are gone. A match ends when a side wins.

Upgrades and combat

  • New upgrade tiers for Solar panels, Shield Domes, Warehouses, Extractors and the Flux Siphon.
  • Tier-1 shields let enemies walk in but still absorb fire from outside; tier-2 shields must be broken first. Inside your own dome you can see through snowstorms.
  • Longer artillery, turret and radar ranges, and close-range shots are now clearly visible.
  • Frozen water takes twice as long to thaw, so ice crossings stay open longer.

Menus and controls

  • Settings during a match now opens the full Options screen, the same one as the main menu.
  • New CONTROLS tab listing every key and mouse binding, with rebinding for the main keys. The same list is on F1.
  • JOIN MULTIPLAYER sits next to HOST GAME.
  • Menus, unit and building names are translated into all 30 supported languages.

Campaign: coming soon

We're rewriting the three faction campaigns: Cindral Vanguard, Pelagic Choir and Zephyrine Court, ten missions each, telling one story from three sides. While that work is underway, the faction campaigns are marked Coming Soon. Basic Training remains fully playable. Campaign progress from before 0.1.5 has been reset for the new story. Skirmish saves are kept; saves and replays from 0.1.4 and earlier can't be resumed because the game rules changed.

Roadmap

Now live: 0.1.8

  • New map generator styles with water on every map: crater lakes on Moon and Crater Field, mountain lakes in Highlands, a river with a pool beside every base in Canyons, and bays on Ringed by Water.
  • Every start can walk out: ground units reach every other start, every Monolith and their home resources without boats. Island Core keeps its boat-only centre.
  • Buildings can no longer be placed on resource deposits or Monoliths.
  • Smarter bots: they plan, power and rebuild Shield Domes, fight around enemy domes, lay out their bases cleanly and finish off beaten enemies.
  • Also new since 0.1.5: Basic Training on the new moon terrain, slower wading in shallow water, lava for the homeworld battlefields, and tighter Steam licence checks.

Next

  • The rewritten faction campaigns: 30 new missions across Vanguard, Choir and Court, starting on their homeworlds of Kharos, Neryth and Aurelion.
  • Summit walls in the IronFlux Map Editor.
  • Hotkey clean-up and more multiplayer hardening.

After that

  • More map styles, Workshop features and bot difficulty tuning.

Toward 1.0

  • Complete campaigns, polished multiplayer, and the content and balance passes for a full launch.
  • The IronFlux demo stays available until 1.0.
