November 5 Open Space Rework

On Steam

It's been a week since Infinite Voyager launched, and I'm really happy with how the game turned out.

Which is why now is the perfect time to release a complete overhaul of the open world.

What the Overhaul Does

In short, the overhaul basically improves game performance in general. These improvements include:

  • Lowering the time required to load saves.

  • Creating a constant open world between games.

  • The save system now saves sectors as soon as they are created or changed, as opposed to all at once.

    • Once a sector is generated, it only needs to be saved again after it is visited by the player. Otherwise, it'll just load like normal.

  • Sector save files are now renamed so the game can create, then load them as needed, rather than having hundreds (or thousands) of sectors loaded at a single time.

The one catch is that the update is not fully-compatible with saves from previous builds of Infinite Voyager. While the player's main data should be still be compatible, the sectors from the same save will not be loaded with the updated version of Infinite Voyager.

It is for this reason that players are recommended to start a new game if they want to avoid any problems.

How the Overhaul Works

Basically, the overhaul works by having the game create or load a sector if it's close enough. If the player goes far enough away, the object with the sector is "deleted" until the player comes into range of it, and it is reloaded.

This is much faster than the old way of "having every single sector exist at the same time, no matter how far away they are.

Now, some of you may be wondering, "Chris, why did you have every sector loaded at the same time?" to which I answer with, "That's a good point. Why didn't think of it sooner?"

In all seriousness, it's on me. I didn't really run into this problem when I was testing the game, and it only started being a problem when I started running stress tests where I travel hundreds of sectors away from the starting point.

Why Do an Overhaul?

So the game runs faster, even after players travel long distance.

I want Infinite Voyager to be an infinite game, and that's not going to happen if you're traveling at 5 frames per second everywhere you go.

Conclusion

That should do it for this update. The game should run faster, which means more time for you to travel/explore/conquer the galaxy/commit acts of space piracy.
